its my MODEL TRAIN CONTROL MODULE...
« on: July 15, 2015, 09:59:42 am »

Friends.. was thinking to add Model Train Control system to my needed lay out.. so searched a lots.. and found so many complicated circuits.. then back in bed, i suddenly got some basic circuits, so, tried once.. and so effective.. this module works on so basic circuits, and relays.. also can add effects like soft start, soft braking etc.. the time can set by time knob, is based on NE 555 IC, and the power out controlled by a PT.. capable of 5 amps, this one is with in built power supply..

just connected to motor of the engines, for an easy test..

Hi Krishna, I have always made my own train conrollers, I would be interested to see the circuit you have developed.
I have used small amplifiers with capacity and resistor input circuits to give breaking and acceleration.

You have very good low speed control.
best regards

Good morning Roy..
at first my intention was to use OP Amps like LM 320 , and switching ICs like ULN 2004.. but later decided to go with simpler circuits, that mostly using simplest transistor based.. and first i tried with PWM based circuits.. but found so powerful even at low throttle levels.. so, here i need some soft controls possible.. so turned to DC basics.. the start up circuit is based on a Darlington pair transistor, that i made of BC 548X2.. its sure, can only drive milli amps.. so, by connecting a high bright LED, at collector, it works when we apply a bias at base.. so, here, i added a capacitor, along with three 100 K resistor network, at base biasing line.. so, when we apply power supply, the transistor only conduct, after fully charging the capacitor.. when the capacitor is fully charged, the voltage across the base increases gradually, and still that can be controlled by the preset.. so, the LED starts to glow, after a certain time, that depends upon the value, of the capacitor, then start to glow slowly, in to full brightness.. in a very soft manner.. so, the first drive circuit is done.. we have a soft start up circuit.. then i made a second darlington pair, based on SL 100 and TIP 3055.. and for biasing the base, i added an L D R, along with a preset, that sealed along with the L E D of the first circuit.. this arrangement gave me a dramatic result.. the motor connected at emitter of TIP 3055 starts so softly, and can adjust further with presets.. so, when we apply power, the motor still stands dead to a certain time, that can be from 2 seconds to any length, then starts so softly, then in to full power, taking almost 5 to 6 seconds.. to brake the motor, we can short the leads of the capacitor, on first circuit, so it blocks the base biasing of the first transistor set.. once again, the motor stops, waits.. and starts again so softly.. by adding a capacitor, to the L D R , we can add soft braking also, because, even after cutting the power from first circuit, the capacitor, provides voltage to the base, of SL 100, holds motor for little more time and stops gradually, as the capacitor discharges.. so, it stops so softly.. to get hard, we can go without capacitor..

now, we need only a timing circuit.. that is based on NE 555 that you can get ample of circuit from Google.. so, when the set time is reached, the relay energize, or de energize, activating the circuit, so motor starts to run.. and when the relay is again, the motor stops, and starts softly to opposite direction.. for braking, we can add a switch, that shorts the capacitor.. so motor never starts again..
while adding a potentiometer at base biasing of the SL 100, we can add a simple throttle control..

we can also fix this motor driving circuit, without timing circuit, instead can add relays, and leaf switches, that means you have to wire two each wires, at each ends of the track.. so, when the switch is pressed, one relay (DPDT), energizes, and holds there, as we connect the lead through one set of the relay contact.. so the relay will energized until we releases the power supply.. so, we can connect the other set of relays to the next contact set of the same relay, for adding motor drive circuit.. so the train run FOR and REV on its own.. can also add station stop switches at each station, that momentarily shortens the capacitor.. so the train stops.. then starts slowly.. its so easy..

i am adding the used circuit here.. it will be hand drawn..

Hi krishna thanks for the reply followed it all no problem.
Not much different to my own controllers.
Some of my engines are quite old and the electric motors not as good  as they are now so I introduced some input 'spikes' of power just to get the motor into motion.
I have used current modern locos and they start without hesitation.  I have a 00 gauge GWR tank loco that I built from a kit and made my own chassis and that runs very slowly, wish the others were the same.
Do not get much chance to run the locos now as no room.
Also the electronics these days has over taken me, I still have 2N3055 and OC 29's etc.
My last venture into designing my own circuits was in the 1990's.
Look forward to seeing your circuit drawings.

Roy.. its so simple circuits.. you can add or remove any components, and can achieve various results, by altering the values of components..
the circuit 1 is simple transistorized soft start up circuit.. just made of two BC 548.. then it drives an L E D.. that start to glow slowly, to full power.. that the time can varied by changing the value of capacitor, and resistor..

the second circuit stands as a motor driver circuit.. still a darlington pair made of TIP 3055 and SL 100.. then i added an LDR, at base biasing of SL 100, to achieve a soft start up.. as placing the L D R, along with LED, it works so fine.. the C3 is fully integrated circuit.. used a 12 volts voltage regulator for greater stability, and 13.2 volts to avoid voltage dropping because of the devices..

Hi Krishna thank you for taking the trouble to draw out the circuit.  Neat idea to have an LDR connection.

I seem to remember on the circuits I developed  having 2 choices of acceleration and 2 for braking.  The speed was variable but left set at the speed required.  The train would stop at a station by operating an on off switch.  This would apply the deceleration and if you got it right stop in the right place at the station.  Switching the other way would bring in the soft / slow start and that would accelerate the train to the previous set speed sending it on its way again.  This was done this way so that the through trains would run while you could shunt at one station and operate a marshalling yard at the other.
This was all about 34 years ago when my son and I had a large railway layout around his bedroom.

The first parts of the layout were got ready for one Christmas when other members of the family were coming for the day.  We 'lost' my nephew to the trains for the whole day!  He is now Communications and Signalling manager for the UK HS 2 project.

The eventual layout went around his room at chest height, he even made a high stool at woodwork classes so that he could sit and operate.  We had 'Cab control' system with 5 controllers.  It was a lot of fun!

I watched your video, well done.
regards Roy

Good morning Roy.. as you see the circuits are so simple.. but works so nicely.. and i have a long way to go, with my rail road lay out.. and so happy and inspiring to hear that you also makes needed stuffs your self.. the entire circuit can also be fixed inside the engine, so it will be self controlled by all means.. thank you..
