Hear, hear.  I have several and despite some inadvertent dampening they all work perfectly!  Good backup as well.

I've got several Mtronic ESC's never had a problem with them, reasonably priced and good backup, just make sure to get one with ample amperage. :-))

<:( I had the same ESC blow up a couple of years ago, same battery, same motor, same fuse, same radio, and no extra load on motor, sent it back to mtroniks who replaced it,they thought it was some kind of current surge,as to what it was is no one knows, perhaps a bit of weed on prop which dropped off before I the boat to the bank,I checked prop shaft for tightness that was OK,coupling was OK too,the boat is still going strong and the grandkids use when they come to the lake with me so it gets plenty of abuse, just one of life's little mysteries and we are not meant to know,Ray. <:(

I don't see this as an issue for debate.
In this instance there are two photographs of the same model of speed controller, both of which are badly burned. That a number of members may have used this brand for a long time with no problem doesn't alter the fact that these two particular examples caught fire. I know of several other instances of this, all involving this 15A ESC. Our mate Shipmate 60 (aka Bob Blease) will recall his own experience with just such an item.  As I drafted this, Sparkey Ray posted his own story about an example he had which did the same thing.
I doubt whether the two owners concerned will gather a crumb of comfort from any number of staunch defences of the marque. Replacing a speed controller which has caught fire and badly damaged a model might seem like a plus point, but it's a bit like Vauxhall saying that if the brakes fail in your Astra and you have a crash which writes off the car then they'll fix the brakes for free. In the case of a FOC replacement speed controller one might take the view that you're being send another potential fire-bomb! (Cynical? Moi??)
Frankly I'm not in the least bit concerned which brand of speed controller anyone uses. I'm not in the manufacturing business any longer so I have no axe to grind, and there are models for which there are no suitable ACTion speed controllers anyway e.g. my model of Vic Smeed's "Twinkler" has an MTroniks 10A speed controller in it. I've had no problem with it and I've not heard of anyone who has.
The point is that if you use this specific model (Viper 15A) then be aware that others have had problems involving them catching fire for no obvious reason, and just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean that it won't. It's only common-sense - like fitting a fuse, as Ken says.

:-) Hi DM,the unit was fitted to a Lisa M launch and the damage was limited to just scorching to the ply mount it was fitted on,even how you can smell burning when you remove the superstructure,I had a 15amp car fuse fitted which didn't blow and have downgraded to 10 amp and it works well, the manufactures may have a fault in the 15 amp version,my mishap happened 2 years ago and maybe the others were made at the same time and it is just a bad bunch,it could be one of the questions we will never know the answer too,Ray. :-)

A 15A fuse can happily conduct 15A all day without blowing, especially an auto-blade fuse, so your replacing it with a 10A one was a wise move. As regards a bad batch, it's possible that these two were from such a batch, but Bob's problem occurred a lot longer ago than two years and I was already hearing about it from customers when I took over ACTion in 2007. My own theory is that it has to do with the way in which the components are encapsulated but, as you say, we may never know. It sure makes them impossible to fix, though!
BTW in case anyone wonders, the very best speed controller for brushed motors which I have used, certainly in terms of its scope and how well it performs, was the MicroGyro FR40. I understand that Mike stopped producing these because he couldn't make any money from them. I'd say that they could have been at least ten quid more than they were and no-one would have batted an eyelid at the price. Quality always comes at a premium, and that ESC was quality.

Yep, fully agree with that about the Microgyros unit. I also suggested it could quite easily stand an extra tenner on the price and people would still buy it.. problem is people are a strange bunch. I know people who will buy a spare cheap Chinese SC, so they can replace it quickly WHEN it blows! Seems that Muppets aren't just puppets with sticks up their bums :}

Perhaps I should have said that no-one with any sense would have batted an eyelid etc. Buying twice for when the first one fails is just plain stupid. Oops - I can feel my soapbox rattling to get out again!
Should we start a petition to persuade Mike to reintroduce the FR40, albeit at a more sensible price?

BTW I'm reminded of Iain Lewis's story (he of Component Shop) when you mention price. At their first Warwick show C/S priced everything at £N.99 and were run ragged taking back pennies in change to the customers and trying to find anyone with loose pence for the float. At the second show Iain decided to round the prices up to the next pound, so £4.99 became £5.00. It seems that one gnarled old gaffer wandered up, picked up a £5.00 battery pack and said "I see you've put the prices up, then".

Blimey Dave you have got a good memory.
Yes mine went up just after the Vipers were produced, at least 3 yrs plus ago.
I was talking to Mike recently about some ESC's.
Unfortunately he has family problems which wont give him the time to produce any ESC's.
More is the pity!!
Here is the OLD pic of my Viper.
