Hi

So bought off ebay on a bit of a whim for my first ever boat

sailed it a few times down local club, new job and unable to sail it for a month

so a month gone by its sat doing not a lot

charged up battery and took it out and its stuck on full throttle.

as it is now esc is out and a new one on order

RC Boats is all new to me remember but this is what I can gather

firstly length 26 inches
height to top of mast 19 inches

brushed motor   with some sort of cooling tubes on it and pumps out water at side and scoops in from underside

no markings on motor so I cant tell what it is

esc 30 amp but no markings

batteries are 6v gel cell and are linked to give 12v

prop is around 10 inches and prop itself is around 4cm

radio gear is 40mhz

charging with imax b6 balance charger and batteries reading fine

when I go to sail boat instantly rudder starts to twitch and then goes to full power/throttle, I have a new esc on order

boat I bought because I liked the look, naïve maybe but I still like its look and would love to get it back on the water and see how it sails

ps batteries are masticed or sealed in and unable to remove, deck also from what I can gather is sealed down

update

so my brushed esc turned up today and compared it to one that came out

need some help with wiring.... switch on the old one goes into esc with the connector for the servo

replacement esc does not come with lead for on/off switch.... so guy how do I get round this ?

as you can see I slightly opened the old esc to have a look and its solder onto to circuit board

You will need to disconnect the battery to switch off or fit a switch in the battery lead. It will need to be a larger switch as you are switching the full current at full throttle. You could get a suitable toggle switch from Maplins.

hi jim

explain what you mean about larger switch do you mean the amp rating?,

this has a deans connector which runs to the battery, wires from the esc pos goes to one battery, neg to other,

so could I do this, from esc solder on the on/off switch, then from the switch I just put on , the solder some wires to join to deans connector ?

pic should tell you what plan is

easiest way if you are unsure about soldering etc is not bother with a switch, just plug in the battery, then esc will arm. I've had those turnigy esc's before, I am sure it does not have reverse, just to let you know.

I'm curios about the mystery brushless esc, was that in the boat? because that's another thing altogether.

HI Guys it looks like this speedo is forward only when you read the instruction sheet. It does have a BEC  but I cannot see any switch on the unit.

Mike
If you'll forgive me for saying it, but the piecemeal approach - buying stuff without much knowledge of what it does - is not serving you well. My approach would be more straightforward.
The motor is an unknown quantity but certainly should not require water-cooling, so remove it and replace it with one which will turn a decent-sized prop at the correct speed for the voltage and the model, and run cool e.g. a Mabuchi 555. Fit a proper flexible coupling between the motor and the shaft. Throw away the horrible DIY prop and use a 3-blade 50mm plastic scale prop. Buy yourself an MTroniks 10A speed controller; this has a switch, will operate equally forward and reverse, and has battery eliminator so you don't need a separate receiver battery. At the same time replace the wiring and connectors to the batteries using 16AWG silicon-covered cable and proper spade connectors. I estimate that this will cost around £40, of which the ESC would be far the most expensive part (currently £20 from Howes). Here is a wiring diagram which shows the full installation apart from the rudder servo; this simply plugs into the receiver with no other electrical connections.
"Upgrades" might include a 15A toggle switch and a 10A fuse in the positive wire from the batteries to the ESC, and a Deans-type connector to isolate the two batteries e.g. for charging.
This isn't the only approach and probably isn't the cheapest, but it will work and you can buy and fit all the parts shown in confidence. PM me if you need any further info.

BTW Don't forget to cap off the water inlet behind the prop or your beautiful new installation will disappear below the waves very quickly!

Here is some information about the Mystery Cloud 30A brushless ESC. It's a helicopter unit, so it will not have reverse. http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Mystery-Cloud-30A-Brushless-Speed-Controller-ESC-RC/416248_760890679.html
I would suggest you put both this one and the Turnigy unit up for sale and use the proceeds towards a proper, brushed-motor, forward and reverse marine ESC.

well said I just couldnt bring myself to say it dave :-))

I am still wondering how that brushless esc featured in this is there another motor we dont know about?
I would risk a few quid on the brushless esc :-)
