New members required and open days in Wiltshire
« on: June 12, 2015, 10:53:33 pm »

The club is Warminster Model Boat Club. It has been in exisistance for over 25 years. That said though the membership has dwindled somewhat and only a handful of members are sailing nowadays. We are a very friendly club and welcome  new likeminded members. We have current use of the lake in the park in town centre, there is parking right next to the lake for the less able with additional free parking very close by. We sail second thursday of each month from 5.30 pm onwards. Guests are very welcome to sail as long as they can provide Insurance details before they sail. We are only allowed electric models or wind power at present but am hoping in get steam approved in near future We are not allowed Fast Electrics per se however sports models are very welcome. Current members enjoy, scale, sports, sail etc. We are hoping to get Sunday mornings approved as well. We intend to have open days as well. Current membership cost is very reasonable £20 per annum however you have to provide proof of insurance. We will be able to offer insurance with membership later in the year. Also planned is a website. So has anyone got a interest in this?

When I lived in Mere, I was very tempted by this club.

The only problem I had was the restriction on sailing times.  Being a working chap, sailing on a Thursday evening wasn't possible and there was no alternative, so I didn't join - sorry  {:-{ .

Get permission to sail at the weekend and you may increase the membership somewhat - it really is a good lake!!!

Just a bit of a heads up in regards to requiring prospective member needing their own liability insurance to be able to join.. you'll find many people do not and will not pay for their own insurance, that's why they join a club, because all clubs have their own club insurance policy,

I expect until you as a club can provide insurance your membership numbers will remain extremely low.

Our club, and its small, 22 members ( it started with just 3 of us 6 yeas ago) has a no member limit £1,000,000 public liability policy, no restrictions on what we run model wise either, it also covers wild life, vet bills etc, its quite comprehensive. total bill for the year £72.50, the first year we had it, Me and the other two founding members just footed the bill in one hit. our annual membership fee is £20 which includes insurance, and maintenance and improvements to our dedicated sail area as well as equipment purchases.
I do wish you luck, i know first hand what its like to start a club and keep it running, hard work, dedication, and frankly a large input of cash with little hope of getting it back!!

Many thanks guys, the weekend sailing is in progress and should have sorted soon. To be honest I sailed here for over a year on a Sunday mornings without realising the club actually existed. I was joined by a few people. Can you please tell me where you got the insurance at £72.50, was it through MPBS?
The open days will be at weekends!

When I said fast Electrics were not allowed that is not strictly true, it can be done but usually winter time as a lot of birds etc on the lake.

Thank you guys will contact both on Monday. What would you want to see in a website for a model boat club? Obviously I have my own ideas but it is good to get input from everyone. Also what would you consider good about a open day?

Just to let you know the park has lots of facilities, such as teas and coffees, plenty of parking, clean toilets, shelter, there is also a Morrison's opposite the park. Park is very close to A36 and A350 and very easy to get to. Longleat and Centre PARC's is within a mile of the park.

Hi Andy, that sounds brilliant. Our club at Yeovil (Model warship association) has insurance and I assume it is the same details and meet on a Thursday and Sunday mornings, so you are on the right track, and I am sure will see the ressurgence in interest.

£20 a year sounds good to me as it is our current annual fee, but that and £70-80 a year is a turn off. Your efforts at getting club insurance also allow you to organise events inviting other clubs as and when you can get permission from your landlords.

Is your lake the one that runs alongside the Were (Swan) River from North west to South East?

I think that is the same day as falls within the Dorset Steam Fair, so I will make a weekend of fun and visit that on Friday and you on Sunday.

I cannot gurantee to have anything to sail by that time though:O(

Hi

Yes the Were is next to lake. We are in the Warminster Park, the entrance is almost opposite to entrance to Morrison's in Warminster. Don't take the entrance down the steps as you will be on wrong side of river, take next entrance with burger/pizza place almost on the corner. You should see flowers to your left and a putting green on your right as you walk down the road, you will also come across tennis courts on your RH side just before lake. You can either park for free in the road (Weymouth Street) for as long as you like or in Morrison's for a couple of hours as long as you buy something. It is a walk of about 200yards to lakeside from the road. If bringing models you may drive into park and drop off however you cannot leave your car in the park.
