Newbie - Italeri Elco 80
« on: August 10, 2015, 07:28:36 pm »

Hi All - I am retired and needed a hobby to keep the "old grey matter " ticking over. My only model making experience was racing 1/8th scale  i/c model stockcars for many years when i was younger. Really fancied the model boat route and after a bit of research a plastic kit conversion seemed a logical starting point .  Got the kit reasonable cheap off Ebay and now have become confused ref the propulsion set up. Various articles from a few years ago all have different variations, 1, 2 or 3 motors - different rudder sizes - different prop sizes, LH or RH props, various battery types and sizes. On my first attempt I just want to build a reasonably scale looking model that will perform adequately on the lake with a reasonable running time between charges. Can anybody suggest what would be my best option. Ps would also like to keep cost sensible until I get my hand in as such. Thanks Alan

Hi Alan and welcome to Mayhem.     :-))

Sounds fun.  I hope you get into it.  The questions you ask will soon be answered.  Have a read through some of the builds to give you a better understanding of  'What's what'.  You are welcome also to post any pictures of the craft so that we can see the state of affairs and maybe advise.

All the best

Welcom Alan, I start just like you but with a Italeri 1/35 MAS 568 serie 4a it is a lot smaller than yours so I went with a single brushless motor on a 2cell lipo I have attached a link to its first outing the picture quailaty is not to good but you will get an idea of what it goes like it was sitting to low in the water I have sorted that now.

For my first model and converted to RC I am very happy with it.

Had to dig a bit for this link. This builder has chosen a single motor and prop installation setup.
