PLEASE READ THIS
« on: July 26, 2007, 09:41:24 am »

Certain threads on the new section will be thinned down and some comments removed and some will be moved around a bit when I find out how  ;D  I do hope this doesnt offend anyone on the Forum when I remove any comments; Im doing this so that the reader is not distracted from the main issue.

Also, I would like to add a new Section called 'What's in it' where I would like all of you who have built or have operating models of any description, tug, fishing boat, warship, to list several things:-

1.    Type of model - e.g. tug, warship etc.

2.    Size of model - e.g. scale 1:96 or how long your model is mm or ft.ins

3.    What motors do you have in your model

4.    What size/type propellors and how many

5.    What size power unit and what battery

6.    How long running time do you get on the water (rough estimation - just say one hour/ 3/4 hour)

7.    What Speed - e.g. is it over scale speed, near enough scale speed, under scale speed

The reason for this, if we gather this information, the person either building a kit or a model will be able to have a look amongst the replies - e.g. for arguments sake - he's built a Model Slipway Tug and he will be able to compare what the recommended internals are, compared to what everyone else has used.   It will give him an idea to upgrade it, or stick with the recommendations.

Last but not least this is for everyone  ;D

I am a new moderator on the block and Im operating a traffic light system :
Green = you know Im watching  ;D
Green and Amber = I will be able to amend postings
and I hope nobody will ever see red and that suit of armour is never used and if it is I have no friends and I dont take any prisoners ;D cant say fairer than that  ;D

 ;D

Welcome new Moderator but beware, a fair percentage of Mayhemers will have red/green colour blindness, some genuine, some tactical.

Im afraid my friend - it doesnt matter who or what they are - tactical or not - if Martin or I feel its not relevant to the thread or topic, I will remove.   Say no more.

Hi John
Do we just post to this new section and you will juggle the item to the relevent section? or do we need to post to the correct section.

hi ya there, it would really help immensely if we can try and get it straight to the right section with any amendment/juggling around - we would then communicate with the person/s who posted /are involved in the topic to discuss and juggle  ;D  Cos its up to the person who has actually created the topic.

Would it be useful to have a 'pre-build' or even 'pre-model choice' type of topic?

How to read plans, rescale them etc. if scratchbuilding.
How to calculate or find displacement etc.
Ease/difficulty of getting fittings.

That sort of thing, so that you can get a better idea of the real cost or the real problems before that decision is made.

Right then, to business...

I claim to be the Forum moron when it comes to anything electrical (If I can't see it I don't know if I've broken it or if it has just leaked away)
I would welcome information on topics that are second nature to people like Bluebird and F.L.J. (among others)
Simple stuff like how can I fit lighting and indeed what type of lighting to fit? How do I work out what rating of cable I need for a particular task? How do I ensure that I can obtain optimum range for my R/C? Do engines need to be cooled and if so how can this be achieved? How do I knit a sweater for my Mum - WHOOPS sorry, wrong thread but I 'm sure you get my drift.

For the BASICS section please aim toward getting people like me to understand what is needed and why. Use me as the standard so that all those Mayhemmers who have a question lurking but were afraid to ask for fear of appearing dumb can rest easy.

One final thing... Please, I don't want smart one liners, I want information.

Good luck John, I am sure you are the right moderator for this section

Regards to all

Hi Clegg

What we would like to try and do here, in these topics, is to encourage members of the forum who have a speciality and to encourage them to come forward and add to these topics with their good ideas and good ways to help us all.

So come on one and all, add your ideas/ways of doing things and tell us all such as:-

how do you calculate how thick a wire you need for a certain size electric motor etc.,

how do we calculate the ballast required for a given model

the list is endless..... all we ask is that sometime when you are actually doing something on your model, think to yourself, this is my way of doing it - it would be nice to share this idea with someone else

doesnt matter how small or large the topic is.

John
If we fill in a 'What's in it' posting and we have already done a build would it be an idea to do a link to the build in case anyone wants any more info.

Thought I'd better ask John first Clive as I am one of the unfortunate ones that are red and green colour blind. ???

John

Just a thought - if people are posting on the "Whats in it" and the set up they are using is not what the kit manufacturer recommended, the reasons for their change might be instructive ?

For example I am building a Model Slipways "Loyal Tender".  When I post the details it will be seen that instead of the recommended 540 motor with gearbox on 12 volt nicads, I am using a MMM Type 8 (car heater) motor with two 12 volt gel batteries. This allows me to run on 12 or 24 volts.

Overkill ? not  for sailing on our lake where the recommended motor would be grossly underpowered for the conditions we experience, and the batteries need to be big as we sail for very long periods, but without that explanation it could be puzzling to someone thinking of building from that kit.

Don B, some very valid points you are making, and, they have been taken on board.   The idea of the topic is really as a 'quick reference' for anyone fancying building a model of any description i.e. kit or scratch.

As you say, yes, you do have a valid point for altering yours and the way I think to go around it would be say Motors altered from original spec, because of location of the sailing of the model, open mountain lake approx 3 miles wide x 3 long or, sailed in the open sea to the environment.

If there is, for arguments say, a build going on, where items have been altered in the model from the manufacturers recommendation also, you could put a link to that page, so, when person has finished reading the postings, he can then follow the link up to the build and make his decisions then, if needs be.

Just to add to this, when we get sufficient responses on the thread of the variety of models, I intend, with the help of Martin, to try and split them into the relevant groups - i.e. tugs and trawlers, warships and soforth, so then the person can use it as an easy reference, instead of reading through the full topic.  ;D

if Martin or I feel its not relevant to the thread or topic, I will remove.

Good luck! Takes a lot of work, a good hand and is not that easy. There ist allways the danger in destroying the sense of a thread. But i have faith in Martin and in his Moderators too. Anyway, a forum of this size needs Moderators. In the end we will all benefit from it.
