Marten, Howes & Baylis - "Henry" Steam Engine
« on: September 13, 2015, 08:10:08 pm »

Hi Folks - first post, and I'm afraid it's a question!

Looking at the lovely bit of kit here, can anyone let me know the pros and cons of the two engine variants offered please (Anton ‘Quartz’ engine and the Typhoon Motors TM1)?

Thanks!

 :-) Hello!
The Typhoon motors has deen designed to answer to the people in a hurry to play with their machine.  %)
One man is dedicated to its manufacturing and you can have one within 10 days, 2 weeks. There is an important stock of spares available.
For the inconditional of the mono-cylinder, then the TM1 is perfect with its reliable,  reverse control. :-))
For those who want bi-cylinders , then the Quartz is the good choice . It is powerfull and would run with cold water. {-)
Both are good to me and I am fond of them both, but you need to know what the others Mayhemmer think as I am a bit partial! :embarrassed:
This complete Marten , Howes & Baylis assy is wonderfull. :-))
Best regards.

Thanks!

So there's not much to choose between either of them really?  For me, it may just boil down to which one I like the look of best!

I'd really like a Hemmens plant and boat, but the prices are too much, and I'm concerned about timing issues - are the plants in the Marten Howes boat quality/reliability compromised in comparison to a Hemmens plant do you think?

Bonjour,

I fully agree with Kbio. good choices, I have 3 Quartz (two in my 16 kilos Fulgerul) and one TM2.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jombigGCM8 and a Hervé's TM2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMYKEnk40yM

Based on my experience, I would say that the TM steam machines are more recent and perhaps more well built. The Quartz is an "old" little economic steam one. Prices are more or less equivalent.

Which one would I like the best ? Difficult to answer for me, my passion was born with the Stuart D10  :-)

Judging by the quality I have gotten from Mr Hemmens past year, I sincerely hope that the French engines are much better quality.

Just interjecting for a minute, has anyone had dealings with Marten, Howes & Baylis recently?

How has their service been?

Yes. I have ordered from John Hemmens a new gas burner for an old Hemmens boiler that was missing it. When the burner arrived, it was silver soldered out of alignment with the base (it is a burner that fits at the bottom of the boiler), the ceramic was glued in very sloppy and it also didn't seem to want to get glowing right. Certainly not the quality which I would have expected when looking at the Hemmens products of the old days. I have sent it back and it took me numerous emails and a long time to get my money back. He still owes me the postage fee...

I seem to be a bit confused here, what connection has John Hemmings to do with Marten Howes & Baylis?.

None, the Hemmens bit was in reply to the above messages.

Just that I have seen both these engines in boats and that they looked Quality and well made and seem to perform well,so many things happen to companies these days I thought one or the other had gone, glad they have not though......Ray.
