Topic: Fairmile "B" or "D" Plastic Model (Read 13811 times)

Hello All,

I have spent a couple of hours looking for a company that makes a plastic model of a Fairmile "A" or "B". I have looked at all the usual suspects and can't find one. Anyone have any ideas?

If 1/72 you can use the fittings from Coastal Craft

Thank You very much for your reply. I have emailed mtb hulls for a quote on a hull as I have an excellent set of plans for a 1/24 scale boat. The kit is a bit out of touch at the moment do to the Canadian exchange rate which would put the kit around $350 landed here.

Well, I have solved my problem and given myself several years of model making ... and it is all Longshanks fault

I followed his link to MTBHulls... had several emails back and forth with Christian ... the net result of which is that three hulls will be on their way to me next week. I ordered a 1/24, 1/35, and a 1/72 Fairmile "B".

The 1/72 is for a diorama and I will be making it as detailed as I can with accessory kits from all over. The other two will be r/c and I just need to decide which one I will do first.

The 1/72 one will be in a diorama. Seven of these boats (8 actually, but one caught fire in the shipyard) were built quite close to me in Orillia. They would then go south through the Trent Canal System until they reached Trenton, on Lake Ontario where they were inducted into the Royal Canadian Navy for duty on the East Coast and down to Florida. I saw an archived photo of one of them in the lift lock at Young's Point which is only 45 minutes from me. I am going to try and model the lock, with the Fairmile in it. My only problem at this point is the photo was taken in 1941 and my plans are as 1944 and some things are different. I need to try and find out what she was like "as delivered".

Interesting project Tom. Do you have a pennant number for the boat concerned?

I'm sure you've come across it before but a great reference book to beg, steal of borrow is
' Allied Coastal Forces of WWII by John Lambert & Al Ross Volume 1.
There is even a section specifically on Canadian Bs

I am looking for that book. I also have the "Anatomy Of" book by Lambert on it's way so that may give me more info. Of coursem having the three hulls, I could have them all from a different period of service.

I have checked the above title. There are plans of Q061 in '44 but no earlier info. Looking at the pics of earlier boats I think the main difference would be in the armament.

Coastal Craft models supply various fittings that are suitable.

Longshanks, that is a beautiful build. I like the water effect as well. I am making a list of the Coastal Craft goodies and I will put in an order soon. They have some very good stuff for the 1/72 one. Yes, all three hulls are for the "B". I couldn't decide what size I wanted

Well, I just thought I would mention that my hulls are on their way. They left Gibraltar on Monday, just as Christian told me they would. I should see them in about a week and a half or so. Then the fun can begin.

This is one of the lift locks that I am considering for the diorama with the 1/72 hull.

My only concern is that the model of the lock will take away from the model of the boat.

I have to announce that my hulls arrived today. They are all in once piece thanks to super packing and support.

I now have to figure out what size I am going to build and what size I am doing nothing with at the moment.

Ok, after much looking and figuring, it looks like first up will be the 1/72 scale one and it will be in a diorama in one of the Trent Canal System locks. It will be either the Peterborough one or the Kirkfiels one. I have lots of time to decide the location.

The small one will be done as delivered from the boat builders.

I have read in various places there was some sort of mounting track let into the deck of a Fairmile so that things like armament could be quickly changed. In all my research, I have been unable to find said track on a plan or drawing.

Does anyone know where I might get a picture of this?

I think you may mean the steel rails placed on the deck edges that things like mine racks or depth charge cradles (I think also the torpedo tubes could be attached to them) could be bolted to.

If you look at the build thread of Bluebird's St Nazaire Fairmile B you will see them. They are the sort of open sided square 'boxes' or strips sitting on the deck.

I am getting ready to make a start and I am wondering if this is the spot for the build thread or should it be in the Warships category?

Thanks to Bluebird (John), I am in a real quandary as to what versions I would like to do. The smallest will be in a diorama, and be a Canadian version, but the other two are still in limbo. There is a navigational leader that has a rather intricate tower and radar dome on it, and there is also an ambulance version that looks interesting.
