Which make of ESC ?
« on: September 24, 2015, 05:06:13 pm »

 Hi All,
My next project is a working tug (it will be used primarily for towing so needs to be powerful) which I will scratch build using the Smit Polen hull that I have, spec of running gear is as follows- Tank steering with twin ESC's using MMM T12 motors twin screw, 60mm Kort nozzles with Prop shop L/h & R/h Kort props, bow thruster. What I would like to know is your opinions on whose ESC's to use ? I am torn between using Electronise, Mtronics or possibly Tornado 50amp ones.
Any advice or help would be appreciated especially if you have had any problems with the makes above. Thanks in advance.
      Cheers,
           Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Have you considered the Action Electronics ESC?
While I haven't used the ESC's, I have used the noisy thing, servomorphs and mixers and they do what they say on the tin and are very well made :)

This was designed for the job. There are several in use out there............... http://www.componentshop.co.uk/p94-dual-esc-and-mixer-2-x-20-amps.html
You also have the option of using either 50% or 100% rudder/motor mixing - just flip the DIL switches.

Thanks for the replies guys, re the P94 mixer talking to the guys in the know (Balne moor) who have a great deal of experience the advice is for two separate ESC's for better control of each motor when towing in tight spaces. I am no expert in anything electrical but I remember talking to guys at Haydock about using a mixer and as I understand it the mixer slows down the inside motor and speeds up the outer one, I could be on another planet as to whether this is correct or not however my preference would be that it is me on the TX controlling what happens. Thanks again for the advice I will keep investigating.

     Wow!
I have just been on the Component shop website and read the pdf about the P94 the things you can do with the unit are amazing (especially to an electrical dinosaur like me). Ian was really helpful when I asked his advice on how to wire up all the lighting on my Tug so I think I will give him a ring.
     Thanks again guys.

Got one in a Eldergarth and also in the brute a 5 footer Happy Hunter and they are pussycats to turn...wouldn't ever consider anything else for a twin Motor Tug or anything with twin motors to be honest with you

I concur with that.  Precision control and can even turn long thin warships on a proverbial sixpence.
I now have all five of my twin prop ships fitted with them.
