Hello,

I'm Griff. Semi-retired, living in Jersey, Channel Islands. Ex-computer software/hardware design architect/engineer (IBM, HP, Apple) etc. etc.

Now I have a little more time on my hands - not much though - I decided to re-visit I project of mine back from when I was 10-11'ish. I made an Aerokits Sea Hornet with a Davies-Charlton 0.5 Marine Diesel ... From memory, it was a fair - but not brilliant job - I don't believe it ever sank. It was a long time ago ... when things sure seemed easier... sigh.

Anyway, I recently discovered a set of Aerokit Sea Hornet plans - certainly enough to get started - and did some research and found this wonderful website!!! I notice that quite a few folks here have built beautiful examples of this model.

I plan to revisit my youth, and make a new and hopefully improved version ... you know, reminiscing isn't what it used to be... I haven't decided as yet how I am going to power it. I would like to use an I.C. engine (I might build one - I have built a few one and multi-cylinder engines) but may use an electric motor.

All right, I think I have gone on long enough.

If anyone's interested, I can post photos of my build - please be kind :)

It'll be interesting to see if I've learnt anything in all these years...

Regards to you all,

Griff

PS. Being new, I am bound to make a few mistakes, or accidentally put my 'foot in my mouth' ... so...

There are two model boat clubs on the island to my knowledge. The one I'm familiar with sails at Lion Park. The question of what type of motor you use depends on whether or not you're permitted to operate IC engines any more; many model clubs won't have them at any price. IMHO electric power is by far the most convenient of the two in that there's no noise or smell or problems with starting, and you can have reverse just by pulling back on the throttle stick. A decent brushless motor will outperform any IC engine in this size of model (unless you still have a Rossi or CMB 15 kicking around....) and prices are very reasonable, even when you have to pay the carriage from the UK mainland - or China.
Welcome back!

Welcome! - definitely looking forward to photos of your build!

I'm just finishing off a double size copy of an old KeilKraft kit - the Mermaid - I built it as a test bed for my
first foray into brushless motors and Lipo batteries - first test sail shows it goes very well!

We've all been there and done that, so don't fret!

Hello Dave,

Thank you for your observations.

Unfortunately, Lion Park recently closed - please see here

Yes, in all probability I will use some form of electric motor. It'll be an interesting bit of research. Also, even though my workshop is a fair way from the house, I have horses - young ones at that, and I don't think they - or the wife - would be impressed with the whine of IC motors breaking the normal peace here.

Incidentally, since I packed in my career in computers, I took up technical illustration: here are a few of my cutaway illustrations of one of the largest marine diesel engines in the world.

Somehow, I don't think it would fit in my Sea Hornet :)

Anyway, hope it's of interest to some here.

Thank you SO much again,

Best to all,

Griff

Obviously you are there on the Island but I do not think the Club closed, at least it was not closed when I visited last year, had a good time there., Think you might want to check again, the place closed but not the Club, Could be wrong...
But there are a few from Jersey on this Forum from both existing Clubs.

Hi All :)

I have a question: I only have a large photocopy of the instruction/plans for the Aero-Kits Sea Hornet.

I am in the process of extrapolating and then drawing up detailed (and accurate) parts drawings for ALL the ply components: Skins, Decks, Ribs, Transoms and Bulkheads, etc.

Would these be of interest to anyone here?

Most of the parts fit within A4, however some do not.

But, by combining sheets for the larger parts, it would solve the problem for those with only A4 printers. My drawings when printed on A4 would print exactly to correct size, pasted to ply, and then hence cut-out to size.

Should this be a pain for some, I could design and layout the larger parts into A3.

All the drawings will be in PDF format and completely free of charge - that's if anyone is interested :)

Aero-kits has been out of business for years, so I doubt there's any copyright issue - please advise should I be incorrect in this matter.

Best to all,

Griff

Hi Griff
I am building an Aerokits Sea Hornet from the original plans(with a few mods).
If you require help this site and the model boats mag. forum site are very helpful.
I have post a number of photo's on my boat under Sea Hornet 2015.
Hope to wet the bottom by Xmas!!!
Going brushless motor with a Lipo battery.
