Battery/motor set up on 1/12 scale lifeboats
« on: September 30, 2015, 05:16:43 pm »

I have a fancy to build a 1/12 scale Severn/Tamar/Arun  lifeboat from one of the kits.
These are big models over 50 inches long and I have wondered about the power set up and battery life.
Could some one who runs one of these models tell me what set up they use and what run time they get from the batteries.
I would like some idea of what run time is typically achieved by people running this type of model.
On reading the posts I have seen some disagreement on what different set ups will give you so a couple of statements of actual set ups would clarify what can be expected.
Thanks in advance

You will need a lot of ballast to bring it down to the waterline so use a large 12v Gel cell.

Big 12v gell cell means BIG motors for scale speed.

Thanks for the replies but what I am getting at is the specifics of battery, motor, performance and run time?

I ran my 1/12 Severn on two lipo batteries for motor power these mounted in vertical bulkheads port and starboard. I had a 12v lead acide which was approx 6x4x2 for auxiliary power. I then had about 8 ozs of lead either side of the prop shafts right at the rear end. Trimming was perfect. This is still a big beast to launch and retrieve which is a consideration if you are getting older like me and didn't want to run the risk of a bad back!
