cleaning models. new method (to me)
« on: November 08, 2015, 01:40:22 pm »

I took my old Revell corvette to the lake today, and got some comments about the muck being out of scale.
To be fair, it was very grubby, I clean occasionally with a fine brush, but I hate doing it, bits break off and it's not very effective. When I got home, I removed all the electrics, and hosed it down, all that resulted in was lots of smeared muck and all the crevices still filthy.
Brainwave from my wife came next, she'd recovered from seeing me clean something. Try spraying with carpet cleaning foam, then hose it down she said. Result, one immaculately clean model, all the corners of the bridge,  rigging liferafts, everthing dust free.
One note of caution, this is a plastic and metal model painted with acrylics, so if yours is different, do a test first and let us know how well or otherwise things worked.

Warships are notoriously difficult to clean. I use a fine garden spray-bottle with warm water and 2-3 drops of washing-up liquid. Don't overdo it and leave it for an hour and the muck that comes off will surprise you. Of course, your coamings must be waterproof! I then give it a fine cold shower in the bath to rinse off the soap, then into the airing-cupboard (never mind her!) or outside if the sun is out - result - a ship any Admiral would be proud of!  :-))

I'm in Spain so the brand might not help, it's Tapicerias.
It's just like any other foaming cleaner. For me the advantage was that it lifted the muck from the model, then I rinsed it off. The whole clean done in 4 mins, plus drying time.
The result realy is great, better than anything else I've tried. Easier too.

Forgot to say, the cotton rigging has shrunk a little, nice and taut again.
