Hi Tobyker
I have a cat well its SWMBO's really, he is a red tabby called "Socks" he was called that when we got him from the rescue centre the markigns on his pws make it look like he is wearing socks. His favourite habits meowing, bringing mice in the house, dropping hair everywhere, sleeping, eating oh and some more meowing. Hei is pretty nosey when he is awake and has been locked in the shed a couple of times as I do not see him come in and hide under the bench, that is always my fault.
He has not sat on my boats yet I think he is to lazy to climb up to them.

There are at least two sides to every question.

I am an animal loverand like to encourage wild life. I have a nice big pond in my garden, with fish, frogs, newts and toads. The odd squirrel pops in now and again. We try to discourage the ducks from nesting here, but lots of other wild birds do.

Why would I want to introduce a mindless predator that will kill anything that moves just for fun?

Rick,
Please don't tar all the cats with that much used description. Some actually do behave in a friendly way to other animals / birds etc.
Yes, I have a cat or should I say that I live with a cat. She doesn't venture outside, takes a passing interest in things that move in the garden but has much too much sense to fancy the birds - mainly because they are bigger than she is.
This one is a Birman, in a way she was a rescue cat as she couldn't settle with her owner. She can drive me demented at times but would I be without her? No way.
To many people a cat is a vital part of their life and long may that remain so.

Sweeper and Smally Too (the cat with a Bristol accent)

First of all it is only the cats that are left outside at night that go hunting. Our cat stays in at night and during the day is only allowed out in his own back yard. It is only the neglected cat that is left to fend for itself at night that kills wildlife.

In this country I would never encourage a toad in any place, they deserve to be killed on sight. They ooze a toxic poison that kills a greater number of wildlife than cats do.

Sweeper, I don't particularly like cats (for reasons stated) but I'd never tar one! (or harm one in any other way). That said, I wouldn't encourage them either.

Nearly all my neighbours have a cat (or cats) and they are all well-loved and well-fed. However, that does not stop their natural predatory instinct and they will stalk and harm/maim/kill almost anything that moves - day or night.

Hi Bigfella, don't have a downer on toads, they are all part of the great natural cycle and have been around for millions of years..... and they have'nt managed to kill of all the wildlife! I like cats but would'nt want to keep one as I also love the birds which inhabit my garden. It's not the first time a cat has been chased fron my garden with a handfull of pea shingle following its bum over the fence because it has been trying to kill the birds... during the day!
The only creatures I actually do kill on site are wasps, mosquitoes and horse flies, the latter two I actively hunt down and exterminate on site because they are persistent sods and bring me up in crippling lumps..little swines!!

Hi All you cat lovers. Here is another of my cat that sits on my laptop. Obviously this one prefers computers to boats especially when he wants to get warm and dry. Cheers Graham.

I Have a Cornish Rex called Moogie, and like most cats she has a burning need to see what it is that I am doing. She spends hours sat on the end of my modelling bench, with the odd swipe at whatever she thinks she can get away with. The beauty of Rex Cats is they do not shed as much as normal cats, but i still get the odd hair on the paintwork and because of their type of fur it looks like short & curlies stuck to it..

The cat that deigns to reside at my house is a repressed sailor. Every time I build a boat it decides to inspect the inside of the hull no matter how big or small the hole is , in she goes! In this case it was checking out the engine room of the big Mersey I built.

Hi Bigfella, don't have a downer on toads, they are all part of the great natural cycle and have been around for millions of years..... and they have'nt managed to kill of all the wildlife!
As I said in this Country, Australia. The cane Toad was introduced into the Canefields in North Queensland to combat the cane beetle in 1935 (only 100 of them) and have since spread as far south as south of Sydney and as far west as West Australian border and spreading at a rate of 35km per year. This creatures body is Toxic from tadpole to well after its death.  It can spurt deadly neuro Toxins from its glands on its body that can kill even humans let alone any wildlife that comes in contact with it, it can even kill when its body (after death) contaminates the water supply that all wildlife drinks from. It has decimated the snake and lizard population in the Kakadu wetlands. It has no known predators that can keep the population in check.

Given the choice of a Cane toad or a Cat well I think its a no brainer.

I like cats, but I couldn't eat a whole one.

But I would give it a damn good go - they poop in the flower beds, take birds off the fences, scream and wail at night - people should only be allowed one cat per household, and they should only be let out on a lead like dogs are.

I agree Grasshopper, I believe in the "Dusk to Dawn Curfew" with cats not allowed out at night,  and during the day only in a fenced and escape proof backyard. However some cat owners are less responsable than most and the cat usually gets the blame for being left out at night and like most creatures (including humans) when left to their own devices get bored.
