Nice Severn HD drawings
« on: November 17, 2015, 04:46:23 pm »

While ferreting about the web looking for info and images of Severn lifeboats I came across the following site.

http://www.gandoza.com/3d-watercraft/severn-class-lifeboat.html

There is a tab on the page for HD drawings and there are six nice drawings of a Severn.
The drawings are pictorial not like plans but show things clearer than most photos

They're not that good I can see a lot wrong with them.

Well I guess that shows my ignorance.

Admittedly I don't know much having only recently engaged with lifeboats

So, what's wrong with rivet counters!! Agree with 'JohnO' there seems to be an number of irregularities - however, if they help you understand your model or improve your knowledge that's fine - whatever floats your boat!! Better to have something to look at than stagnate - but 'JohnO' does know his way around both Aruns and Severns in a 'Moody' sort of way [bit of an in joke]!

I wish I hadn't bothered to post it.

I post questions and get almost no useful feedback from the rivet counters (thanks to those who did bother).

I post something I (in my ignorance) think is interesting and get torpedoed

If someone posts genuine  criticism of something that you intend to use for your build, then your post has served it's purpose in the long run, saving you what would seem to me a great deal of time to a mammoth build.

As such both your post and the comments might have saved you a lot of heartache from making something that inherently might be wrong if suspect plans are followed.

In that case the criticism has been very helpful.

I agree with Jim, it is better to accept constructive criticism than to spend hours trying to correct
Errors due to following incorrect drawings etc. There are some builders on the forum that crew
On boats their input is really invaluable.

Les, This was not meant to put you off - I was just just having a 'pop' at myself, as that is what people call me. I agree with Jim's comments, but the site you found was interesting and alongside both the plans and photos would help you look and 'explore' at what you have in front of you. A forum like this then lets you ask the questions and look at the answers and from them take your way forward. Please ask away, seriously we really do want to help and encourage all boat builders, especially on the lifeboat front. I'm attaching the stern view of my friend's Severn Class with it's working outer transom trim planes, but remember this is by no means his first model boat build. We're always learning, and I would not have seen the site if you had not brought it to our attention. Have a look at the Rhyl Mersey lifeboat build under 'Lifeboats', this gives a lot of detailed attention to ways of scratch building the various parts - an interesting build and educational too. I've just finished running a five year course at my home and workshop for the 'over sixties model boat builders' and have learnt as much, if not more, than those that signed up to it!! Much was in the preparation for each weeks topic. So please don't be put off, we'll look forward to hearing and hopefully seeing your build and be supportive in the progress.
By the way, who is Big Ada in the MBA-Dover - I could guess at a few! See you on the 2nd of December!!
Regards to all, Kim

Kim
Thanks for your words of encouragement. I am over my little tantrum now  :-)
It was a pretty casual reference to the drawings, I just thought they might be interesting to someone.

Of course if the drawings I pointed to are not accurate its good to know that. I am waiting delivery of a Severn kit so I am keen to get things right.
