FPV Goggles
« on: January 17, 2016, 08:04:32 am »

has anyone got a boat set up with FPV goggles? I quite like the idea of making a boat big enough to fit a head tilt camera inside the bridge. This could be fun sailing in the sea giving the impression of piloting the ship. What do you think? Can someone with knowledge of such things point a novice in the right direction of what and what not to do or avoid.

I won't be starting until my current project is finished but that's not forever away and I'm already contemplating which boat....... I quite like the Damen Tug from the 'tug porn' thread, up until seeing that I had no real intrest in tugs (U2 ducks to avoid thrown objects) but that looks good.

Another idea was maybe a lifeboat but not quite as much vision from inside is putting me off.

Any more suggestions about boats or info about goggles as I'm sure there are others who fancy doing this........ U2

Hi, have you looked on youtube for FPV quad drone flying?
There is also an instrucional dvd on creating your own quad with reference to the parts needed.

Hi Unsinkable2
I just received my FPV kit from Hobbyking(ID 9171000553-0).
I got it working OK, but, I have not set it up on a boat as I am still building it(37 and 1/2 inch cabin cruiser).
The cable setup is 3S xt60 connector for the receiver and 2S battery for the transmitter(or use an adapt cable supplied to connect to the balance connector of any 3S plus battery).
The goggles monitor has three connectors.
Red to black(the power lead).
Yellow to yellow.
White to red.
On the TX I set the switches to 1 and 3 ON and the rest OFF.
Receiver channel 15.
I have a cheaper GoPro on another boat which gives great footage at 1080DPI.
Hope this helps and we are on the same idea!!!!!!!!!!!!

About 9 or 10 years ago the Burton Club tried this before FPV equipment became readily available. Not quite sure what the equipment was, but a remote camera was installed in a boat, the picture was viewed on a portable TV. It was used for a steering competition. I understand it resulted in great hilarity. Using goggles would remove the biggest obstacle - being able to see the picture on the TV, also there was a problem when sailing into the sun. I think angle of view will be critical - wide enough to see the general picture, narrow enough to judge distances.

Just make sure your video link is not on 2G4 as you will get interference (noise bars)
from any 2G4 users near you.

Just to point out that the HK Quanum set linked to earlier is illegal to use in the EU. The maximum power allowed for 5.8GHz is 25mW and this has a 200mW transmitter. :police: You need to do a lot of searching to find legal equipment and most sellers wont tell you that the equipment they are selling is illegal.

As the original post was talking about using head tracking the sort of equipment which can be used are like these advertised by HK.
Video goggles with head tracking and receiver:- http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__90688__Skyzone_FPV_Goggles_5_8GHz_Div_40CH_Raceband_RX_including_H_Tracker_V2_.html
25mW video transmitter :-  http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__90489__ImmersionRC_Race_Band_25mW_5_8GHz_A_V_Transmitter.html
You would still need to source a suitable camera and make a suitable mount for pan/tilt. Your control transmitter must also have a suitable buddy box input to link with the head tracking module.

Blimey it's a minefield!....... I just thought I'd have a quick look on the hobbyking website but I was there an hour O0 ...... I like the new skyzone glasses but not sure about the difference between the normal camera and the 3D camera. I just assumed with the goggles all would look the same. Then there's the gimbals and transmitter batteries and ooooooooh my head. I'm just going to wait until nearer the time and check out people's results on here and YouTube. But thanks for trying anyway.   U2
