For all you lifeboat enthusiasts I have just noticed that Models By Design are to launch a Shannon Kit at the Ellesmere Port Boat show on 5th and 6th March this year. The kit will comprise the hull, deck. superstructure, fenders and a fittings kit, no indication of price. See their page on facebook.

Yes, have been watching the progression of this build over quite a period now and can confirm that it is 1/12th scale. I'm not a Facebook person, so Andy said I could post some of the photos [not mine] I have of the product here on MBM. They are pretty well what is above on the Models by Design website page, but I've also added a few of the beautifully prepared mould. I've seen the wheelhouse build, well underway, and also the fendering around the hull / deck edge. It is all looking good and Andy is not taking orders yet, but will, once launched at the Ellesmere Show. The close-up of the bow shows the second spray rail to be 'filled in', this is to allow the hull to come out of the mould, the channel will need to be put in by the modeller - it has been made to take this process. This is a wonderful shaped boat by the RNLI and I will be preparing a DVD of still photographs [of which I have over 1,500 already - I spent six hours at Dungeness RNLS last week photographing her all over and inside, plus lots of measurements around the upper steering position, a tricky area not easily digested from the RNLI plans for modellers. These photos will go with the 800 I have already taken of the launch and recovery process, which I give talks on around the country to various groups - proceeds to the RNLI. I hope it whets a few appetites for a future project. Kim

Please excuse me for being or sounding naïve, but why are so many manufacturers ( reading between the lines on this forum) racing to produce a kit of the same vessel.

Surely only so many persons will buy one, and after looking at those companies, ( four I think I have counted at present) they are all producing very beautiful  moulds, will there be a market place for so many of the same boat?

There is a gentleman on here I think called Mk1 who has made some beautiful moulds and superstructure, and there is also a gentleman from Germany who is also working on moulds, if my memory serves me right.

I have seen him posting in the lifeboat section but cannot remember his name or where he is from.

It is just that I am interested in lifeboats in general, and I know that Fleetwood RNLI station is due to get a replacement Shannon for their old lifeboat later this year.

Sadly building one of these beautiful boats is far beyond my capabilities but I do like the shape of them and the concept of their power propulsion output.

Yes, you are right. The gentleman is Jurgen [Jeurgen] from Germany. I sent him a number of photos he requested to help him in his build, but was not aware he was going to produce it for sale - but could be well wrong there.

i am same as you i am into my lifeboats as you can seee from my lifeboat fleet thread,   i no rhyl just had the coastal review so fingers cross we get a shannon,  building is beyond me lol

Ahh, yes that is the gentleman Kim. I remember now.

I thought that at one stage he was asked by someone whether he was going to produce hulls, superstructures and fittings for a boat, as it was some time ago and he said he might think about it.

Presumably with these other companies stepping up to the mark he might have reconsidered it, himself.

I still don't understand why so many are building to sell though. Seems saturation of the market. to me.

i thought there was some sort of un written agrrement,   between them,   like model slipway did 1:16th tamar and trent yet speedline does the 1:12th of both,   and no one as redone likes of mersey or solent or arun etc etc

Dear John, I must apologise if I have caused any discomfort to you and  Jurgen with any previous statement.

As a new comer I must learn to read between the lines before making any comments.

I took your very wonderful construction of your Shannon boats and Jürgen's masterful  3d impressions to be the 3rd and 4th  "companies" to be in the "race" and again I do apologise most sincerely.

I think I might be able to clarify a few thing for you Shannon fans.
I am doing both a 1/12 and a 1/16 kit of the Shannon.
(I have written a bit about it elsewhere on this site}.
Jürgen in Germany helped me out a lot with 3D drawings of the hull and the wheelhouse and he will be building one of my 1/16 versions.
I did not know that Andy Griggs was doing a Shannon moulding set but that's what Andy does and its a popular subject so I don't blame him at all.
I am offering a complete (and very different) kit so a different market place. There is room for everyone I'm sure.

Got to meet Andy G. [MbD] at Ramsgate harbour early today on another marine related matter and was able to get my hands on his Shannon hull and deck [at this moment still not fitted to the hull] and pose it against the Class of lifeboat the real ones are replacing - the 12 metre Mersey. This is sitting on the quayside as a Relief boat at the moment and is the ex-Exmouth lifeboat RNLB Margaret Jean 12-21 [17-09 and myself photographed it to bits - interior too - a week or so back!]. The model Shannon has superb lines and was a nice moulding, with no flex - pleasantly rigid, yet light. Some of the crew off the Ramsgate Trent Class lifeboat RNLB Esme Anderson 14-02 came over and had a look and were impressed. For those that know me and my model lifeboat collection, Andy told them he 'was moulding a special edition of the Shannon just for Kim' - in grey!! I've seen the finished wheelhouse 'plug' - having helped with some photos and vital measurements off the Dungeness Shannon 13-02 - and that is looking very nice too. He did give me the OK to put some of the shots on MBM - so here they are.
I must say, I think the Shannon model idea from Adrian [Flundle] at Speedline Models is a good one, for the ultra scale static modeller, of producing an interior set of works as well as what most of us want for its R/C operation. Spoilt for choice all round - Christmas has come very early this year for all of us!!
