Side paddle wheel
« on: February 28, 2016, 12:41:10 pm »

Is there a formula to get the depth a side paddle wheel should sit into the water.
The plans I'm using are not as clear and in depth to find the depth.

Hi Rick,
on a feathering side paddle wheel, for example found on Clyde built paddle steamers, when one of the floats is completely immersed at the deepest point in the water during rotation (the float should be vertical), then there should be approx. one third of the floats height  depth of water above the top of the immersed float.
I do have a plan showing this, I will try and find it and post it here.

Newbie, I saw a couple of nice paddlers yesterday at Glasgow Richmond Model Boat Club.co.uk, helpful people at the heart of Clyde steamer country. Contact them for info and help, nice folk.  I cant post pictures today for some reason, downsized them etc.

Rick,
I found the plan. You will see the loaded draft line marked.

Hi Rick,

Here is a practical model example which works out to be pretty close to what Clark said.

The model is a 48th scale Columba.
