Jet drive for the Shannon
« on: February 20, 2016, 04:26:35 pm »

I cannot believe how difficult it is to find the right jet drives.
There are some famous Manufacturers in Germany from whom they can be got but supply is a real issue and price is very high.
Anyway, the Shannon class lifeboat has two of course and since its useless without them I thought I would source them and put them in the kit. (If you've got to buy them from somebody, might as well be me).
Suppling them of course makes it easier for the builder too.
Anyway they are too unreliable in terms of supply, far to expensive and don't really fit properly. They have weird reversing buckets and look nothing like the real thing.
So I am making my own and so far they look fine.
There are lots of designs and all appear to work to some degree. I dived in at the deep end using 123D design and came up with a design I thought looked OK. Over the last few weeks I have been developing the design and have just finished 3D printing everything so next week I will build one to test it out. It will have a tough ABS impeller but I don't really expect it to live very long so if the design works, Simon at the Prop-Shop will be making the impeller.
If it works I'll scale it all down by 25% and see how the 1/16th one works.
At our model boat meeting last Thursday night a number of people  were interested in these for other projects but I have no plans to sell these other than with my kits.
I might do some bow thrusters instead of using the Raboesch ones in my kits and if I do, these will be for general sale. Does anyone have a good source of supply for small bevel gear sets?

Adrian,
Do you remember the old Taplin Baker Hydrojet units designed for the Taplin Twin I/C engine, they were made just up the road at Birchington, not far from me?
Pretty substantial units if I remember and made from metal. Might be worth looking into but I,m sure you have it worked out with your design.
Keep up the good work

The only place I know of for gears and things is Davall gears http://www.davall.co.uk  , not sure if they do stuff small enough for your requirements but worth a look.

I have used HPC Gears for work from time to time. Huge range and good delivery.

Thanks chaps for the help in finding the gears. I have had a squint on the site but they only make bigger ones.
I thought slot racing car gear s might be the business so have been looking for those. Any help here would be welcome too.

Hi Flundle it is nice to see you working on the new models . I really like the Shannon kit you are producing. Thank you very much for the updated instructions on the Tamar, they are a big help when I can get to it. It is a beautiful kit & I must admit it is well worth the price. You were asking about bevel gears, just take a good look at what is available in one of the good model Racing Car shops, they have all sorts of diff drives complete with bevel gears & the quality is very good too. That was where I found the C/V joints that I have adapted to my boat drive shafts. Let me know how you make out & I might be able to help. Mick B.

Hi Flundle,

Read your post with interest, I look forward to your take on the design of a jet drive as I am doing the same thing myself, my build thread may be of interest to you:

Hi Timbo,

Many thanks, I am pleased with how it is going so far, working on the MK2 upgrades today, hopefully doing lake trials tomorrow afternoon
