New Top Gear
« on: June 05, 2016, 08:40:01 pm »

just watched half an hour of the second edition of the new Top Gear, and all I can say is why does the eejit chris evans have to shout all the time, and thank god for the TT highlights after it to dilute the rubbish.

I won't be watching again.

wonder what the ratings will be next week.

I reckon Points of View would get more was it still running.

When Clarkson, et al took over it was terrible, it'll take time to bed in.... I have high hopes for it... as it doesn't have Hammond in it now!

I understand they had to put in canned laughter to cover the grim reality of being in the audience, that was according to an audience member who watched the show when it was screened.
Never been a fan of Mr. Evans and hope this is a wake up call for the BBC, I hate to think what salary they are paying him.

The three were top Gear and the BBC should have just let it end and moved on, I can not see it lasting as long as the past presenters did.
C.E  should have stuck with his various tv shows he does, and as for the Yank , nuff said..

I can't stand Clarkson in any way shape or form . . .
 Matt Le Blanc seems knowledgeable & a petrolhead ,we'll see . . .
I'd give the show a couple of weeks and see what happens . . .
Evans is out of his depth . . .
The format is the same , showing us cars we cant afford  & doing stupid things with them  . . .
Sabine Shmitz would've been better as lead presenter but she does the German top gear . . .

I loathed it before and I still loath it. Why oh why can we not have a program about cars we can afford? <*<

And if I remember correctly it flopped in the ratings because it didn't have the x-factor of combining excitement with facts, which the revamped Top Gear with Clarkson achieved.

The old Top Gear morphed from a boring middle-of-the-road car show (remember when Noel Edmonds used to be the lead presenter?) into a modern-day Three Men in a Boat where the cars were largely irrelevant. Folk watched it more for the interplay between the three middle-aged delinquents - a bit like Last of the Summer Wine for petrolheads. It was slickly scripted and very well edited. Like him or loathe him, Clarkson made the show what it became. James May came over as a slightly geeky old duffer while Richard Hammond was the yapping little dog you just wanted to kick. All clever stuff and very successful - until JC started to believe his own publicity. They are all very rich men and I've no doubt that their Amazon Prime adventures will be even more lucrative, if nothing like as widely viewed.

I see that Matt LeBlanc is more popular with viewers than Chris Evans is and it's not difficult to see why. He personifies 21st century American TV "cool" while Evans is a loudmouthed yahoo from 90's radio and TV with far more money than his talent warrants. The trailers alone convinced me that TG2 was doomed from the start, and I can't see the Beeb selling it around the world like TG1. Liz has my permission to shoot me if she ever finds me watching it!

The whole thing about programmes like TopGear is the cars we all dream about owning, the mainstream boring stuff we can afford and do drive everyday you can go see, touch and test drive at your local dealerships.

Admittedly the new programme's lead presenter has the ideal face for radio and that's where he should stay the scriptwriters shouldn't give the carrot top similar lines to Clarkson then people would be less inclined to draw a compariso , leBlanc has a wooden charm about him and his ignorance of British ways and the language divide is quite endearing.

I shall watch it again next week, hopefully it will get better if Chris EVans ever gets over his childish over acting excitable self and realises he's not Clarkson.
Besides for a Sunday evening telly it was the best of a bad bunch.

As said above 5th Gear might fill that need, though I doubt it (gave up on it some time ago).
However things have changed hugely since the days of the original TG. Cars are largely commodities or tools and few people would watch a purely factual programme about them - would you watch a programme about domestic appliances? (No, The Gadget Show doesn't count  :-) )

So a 'car' programme audience is likely to be petrol heads and/or people seeking entertainment. Whether you (or anybody for that matter) happened to like JC and co, they hit the right buttons and the BBC are trying to keep that going. Shame CE persuaded them he was the man for it.

I agree that C.E. has the face for radio but I think that he may be too tall.

I never liked the original series.  Overpaid nutters doing irresponsible stunts in expensive cars.
No intention of watching the new series.  Can't see it lasting long.

'cos then Barry it would as boring as watching paint dry. (I was going to say "hell" but on second thoughts, that could be quite interesting) What's needed is aspiration 'yer know if I work hard enough, con dealers into thinking that I'm famous just for being famous, defraud the state or the shareholders, I too can have one of these to make lots of smoke and demonstrate what a little willie I have.

I the meantime I'll just have to make do with my Volvo diesel estate (a wonderful work horse BTW) and putting the TR6 back on the road and drooling over an XJS drophead.

I can't stand that ginger nut at he best of times either, but the Yank wasn't to bad, I have to admit though that's only after the first half hour last week.

drooling over an XJS drophead.

I wouldn't recommend drooling too much, it will rust & fall to pieces.. {-) {-) {-)

As for the new Top Gear, watched 5 minutes of the first one, that was more than enough of "Shouty Evans"..

www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36458510

Lost a third of its audience between the 2 episodes , Evans trying to say they've more views using catch up is something that cannot be independently checked and I think the BBC knows this is a disaster , personally I can see this being the last series and it'll be stopped until the 3 old dodgers contract with Amazon ends when I fully expect them to be taken back to restart TG once again ( it earns the BBC far too much money for anything else to happen )

I can't imagine a likely scenario that would get them back there. And I think it would be a mistake for either party to attempt it. Too much history, the BBC being 'changed', TG in this form reaching its use by date, ...
