help! motor and shaft movement

hi all,

i was wondering if any of you can give me some advice, when i put my motor into reverse the coupling winds down the thread untill its tight against both motor and the prop shaft.. how do i stop this, ive tried adding some washers but its still moves.. would thread lock work??

Hi Dan,  normally there would be a lock nut against the coupling but without a photo I can't see what's happening.  {:-{

Is there a grub screw in the coupling, tighten with an alan key.

There is a grub screw, witch I did tighten, however I still have moment  <:(

Hello Dan

I agree with Radiojoe about the locknut but you also need a similar set up on the outside of the boat. I.e. a locknut against the propeller. With tight lock nuts at either end of the prop shaft, and just a little movement back and forth the prop shaft cannot tighten into the prop.

Thread locking compound will help, but using a lock nut tightened against the object that you want to lock is required.  It is good to have thrust washers bot ends - there is nothing in most motors to absorb thrust, their job is to turn the shaft and stuff fixed to it.  Any weak link in the system will cause stuff to be allowed to move.  Unlocked props unwind and line pool bottoms, unlocked inners can either wind up too tight or unwind and in extreme cases be pulled out by waterflow pulling on the prop.
