Empire Tug
« on: May 01, 2013, 07:48:36 pm »

Gents,
I have just brought some excellent moulding of an Empire Tug. The only problem is I need a set of plans to build her. I have searched the net looking for some but no luck. Would anyone have any idea where I can buy a set.
Many thanks

Hi Bob   what Empire tug class would she be? there were about a dozen of the different classes all built in the early to mid 1940s,  would it be the birch class empire Maisie, if so all that I have are a few picturesof the various tugs. if it is that one then I must admit the moulding are excellent as I have just purchased a set, and was thinking of making the Sea Queen of C J King bristol.

Hi folks  the Cervia was a foremost class empire tug, it depends on what hull and mouldings you have Bob if it is the birch class the hull istotaly different to Cervia as is the superstructure, wheelhouse ,engine room casing etc.
another way to go is the ex empire Margaret   Sun tugs london had two both Foremost class but their colours wre brighter than Cervia.

Hi Tugman,

Mountfleet's version is sadly out of production at the moment due to the fire. Hopefully production will re start at which point I may find myself in the queue to buy one!

Bosuns Model Boats do a version of Hull, Superstructure, Deck and funnel etc - is this the version you have?  Their mouldings have five front facing windows on the bridge.

Hi. Bob. That is the Empire Birch class.the mouldings from Alan are really good quality.
There were 19 tugs of that class built but some of the later ones had the angled corners to the wheel box corners.I will pm you tomorrow with a list of names if you wish,  if you look at the picture that I posted earlier you can see the square front to the wheel box.    Geo

Hello Bob,  the Cervia or formost class of tug were 2ft shorter and 1ft wider than the birch class so it really depends on how exact you want to be, the other differences were  the wheelbox shape, the funnel on the formost was eliptical, the engine room top was a different shape and the main casing was also a different shape as well, so if you are looking to be true to scale the upperworks with the kit are of no use  BUT  the hull and deck would be fine, so with a bit of artistic licence you make any steam tug out of it,  have a go matey but make the Sun XVI or XVII they were the same class of tug as the Cervia but they were much brighter looking tugs than the old Cervia she was always the kitchen maid and not the princess, , also Sun tugs were ALWAYS cleaner looking tugs as when they were painted the last coat of paint was thined  50/50 paint and varnish, fussy lot of blighters they were always chiping and painting.

Guys
I know this post is years late but figured I found the post so would add to it
I have the As Fitted GA of Taioma and Tapuhi formally Empire Jane and Shirley
I have also scanned the hulll of Taioma before it was sunk as a wreck and have recreated the lines plan, (I have done Naval Architecture for a job so it's good quality stuff)
Mine is a support model at 1/35 for a large 4.7m model of the same scale
I also have a good library of photos taken by the guys who had her in the historic museum on board as well as  on the cradle.

Here is a link to my site where a couple of images are of just the hull skin.

Hello Richard, yes both of the New Zealand tugs were of the Foremost class, the same as Cervia and the Sun XVI and XVII.
Was the Tapuhi transported inland as a museum exhibit?

Yes in 1979 Taioma ended up in the Tauranga historic village for years before it was sunk in 2000 as a wreck dive.

http://tauranga.kete.net.nz/tauranga_local_history/topics/show/1612-the-taioma-tug

I have a lot of photos of that from the curator who was kind enough to send me prints.
Ah yes the Cervia, I contacted them 2-3 months ago to ask for assistance re plans if any and to ask about the red paint colour on the deck, I emailed every name I could find on the website and to date have not heard a thing which is a shame. I wonder if the group has dissolved.

I have the Cervia model plans but in all honesty they re not all that fair and  the stations actually don't line up so I trust my own hull scan, you can't argue with hull scans unless like the one I have of Cutty Sark that I obtained while doing some drawing for the 2011 restoration ,the hull was collapsing.
Not to mention that Cervia's lines may not be the same as Empire,I cant be sure they used the exact same lines

Hello Richard, your hull scan looks to be spot on for Cervia as well, the only plans that I have ever found are the model Maker plans service ones, which to be fair are pretty good except for the hull lines ,so they are probably the one that you have,
The deck colour was Red Oxide gloss, the main casings and inside the bulwarks was a colour called Dark Teak, and the hull was all black with a medium green boot topping flash No red bottoms in those days just tar varnish up to the water line and gloss black above, my Uncle Bill was skipper of her when she sank in the Thames, I have quite a few pictures of Cervia if you need any.
George.
