help with scale size of boat please.
« on: September 02, 2016, 09:30:31 pm »

What length in inches would a model be at 1;48 scale when the prototype ship is 103.92 meters long and 17.25 meters beam.

Could someone please work it out, as this daft old duffer was lousy at maths.

Thank you.

Jim.

103.92 divided by 48 equals 2.17 meters, or about 85 inches.  A very large model.  And that beam measurement should be checked.  If correct that boat was LOOOOONG and skinny.

Thank you, much obliged.

Yes it is a long skinny ship. it is a tanker of sorts, and way beyond my capabilities I'm afraid.

Again thanks.

Gotta ask. If it is way beyond your capabilities why were you even asking about what size it would be?

A perfectly reasonable question, Chris, to which my only answer is that my interest in ships covers a wide range of questions, and although I used to build the odd dolls house at 1;12 scale, when I lived in Norfolk I now am limited to building on a kitchen table, or when we finally get round to it, building a lifeboat kit at my friend Neil's workshop over Wyre..

But we were chatting the other day ant he told me that his daughter had just set sail for her first sea phase of her Nautical Science degree course towards an eventual masters ticket in a few years on a ship of the dimensions that I gave, and was wanting to compare it in size to Neil's model of his Scottish ferry.

And it is much larger at the same scale.

And as my mother used to tell me all the time; "if you don't ask son, you'll never learn".

OK I see.

I've just got into RC boats as in semi-retirement and recently bought a 46" Fairey Huntsman sight unseen.

It's bloomin' massive (well pretty big!) and quite heavy. Could be viewed as as a beginners mistake but I'm glad I got it as it's nice to own and will benefit from some detail improvements.

Have  since bought something smaller and more practical to sail and my first build is going to be somewhat smaller than 46"!

Hi Jim - I am thinking that the ship Neil's daughter has embarked is one of the Northlink Ferries ships?

If so then, yes, at 1:48 that would be a large model indeed - which is why we produce our kits at 1:96.

When we get back from the Deans Marine open days I will drop Neil a line - I quite like the look of the Northlink ships........

Carl  :-))
