Voith Schnieder units.
« on: September 23, 2016, 02:30:15 pm »

My mate Neil needs some help fitting these monstrosities, can anyone help.

He has finally got round to thinking of starting back on his ferry which is fitted with them, fore and aft.

Everything is installed as regards to the base rings, but he is pondering about where the sealant rubber actually goes as it is [ to him] unclear on the instructions.

see below:

"Mounting the VOITH-SCHNEIDER drive unit in the model boat The first step is to cut a circular 84 mm hole in the bottom of the boat, into which the plastic mounting ring is glued.
Mould the gasket material supplied 5 mm and using your hands then place it on the sealing surface of the mounting ring; it should be located outside the screws. press the gasket material into the corner of the 1'5mm recess and press home the VPSU."

It's that last bit that Neil is unsure of. Can anyone explain with a photo or a drawing of how and where this rubber sealant actually goes, as he has only just got back his confidence to get back to the model and doesn't want to muck it up now and suffer another set back.

Thank you.

Jim.

Jim
I've sent you a PM about this. I wonder if you'd be so kind as to let me know as/when/if you receive it, please? I've had no replies from several recent PM's I sent out and I was wondering if there is a "problem" somewhere.

Around the outside of the screws was where I put mine.

Thank you Umi for your kind help and photos.

I will pass this info on to Neil. he couldn't work out whether it was that side or the other side of the screws.

He was thinking it was in that position but was confused, as was I because we both thought of that as the "inside" being next to the raised rim.

And as these have been discontinued he didn't want to muck it up before checking.

Whilst I am speaking to you, I haven't seen the sealant myself, but do know he bought the units some years ago. Will this sealant have gone off and hard, and if so can he substitute it for something else like silicon sealant

many thanks.

I will do Derek, but he comes on here now and then as a guest, I think, from comments he makes so will probably see your posts, just not any pictures.

The sealant should not have gone hard.
It is essentially a putty sealant that can be found for caravan or RV windows.
So it should be availabe at an auto parts store if you need more.

Thank you Umi, and thank you too, rnli12

I'll pass the info on. I think he's started building again.

Hi,

Just one think to be mindful of is any distortion in the base ring when fitting to the hull, but good luck anyway.

I think Neil sorted it all before he had his time out.It was just the interpretation of "inside" or "outside" that he was unsure of, but that has been sorted with Umi's photos. Thanks.
