1/12 scale deck planking size
« on: November 07, 2016, 07:19:31 pm »

Hiya all,

Ive decided to put some planking on my decking and wheelhouse, but im unsure what width to use to make it look scale?

I was thinking about buying the ready cut walnut strips, but widest i can find is around 10mm which im guessing is far too slim for 1/12 scale?

Would i be better off buying walnut sheeting instead of strips then cutting it to my own width?

But like i say, im not quite sure what width?

The width might also be affected by the type of boat it is, as well as the scale.

10mm  X  12 = 120mm = 6"...sounds about right, even slightly too large for most deck planking.

Looking around, most? boats seem to have about 4" deck planks....so 8mm would seem about right.

1/12 works out at about 2mm to the inch, so 10mm is a 5" plank, my model is 1/12 and that is about the size I will be using, though I might go down to a narrower plank when rounding the tighter curves on the hull

I have made a couple of dolls houses in the past for relatives, and used a walnut and an oak veneer for the floor boards on the old Victorian houses that I made, but that was some years ago.

I bought the veneer, mail order from a company called Boddies, of Boroughbridge in Yorkshire.

Very reasonable then and easy to cut into  12mm wide planks for my 1;12 scale houses.

I glued them to the plywood floors with aliphatic resin from any model shop or on line.

hi guys :)

Thanks for info! ..i had a feeling it would be around 10mm (that's what i've been looking at) but just wasn't too sure & didn't want to buy a load of planking (or worse still, stick it to the deck!) & then realise it didn't look right!!

Cheers again :)

You could always use Coffee Stirers.

I think they be too thin in width?

I think they be too thin in width?

So your boat would be unique.

hi guys, just trying to figure out what width strips i should go for, after doing some math & looking at some plans, ideally i need around 30 planks to cover the width at the widest point of my deck (center probably) ..the total width at centre is around 450mm... so i'm guessing (btw i'm no expert at math!) i need strips of around 15mm width, problem is...largest i can find is 10mm width so it wont look scale & as im going to need alot, its also going to be pretty expensive so i want to make sure i get the correct size if poss!

Anyone know of anywhere that i can get Walnut)strips around 15mm width please?

Cheers guys/gals! :)

If it was me doing it...I would be inclined to draw out the deck shape, full size for the model...and then draw lines on at the width I thought might do...just to see how it looked...personally, I think 15mm planking will be too wide.

Not sure why you would want walnut for decking. Lime strip is available in a range of widths, has little visible grain and can be finished in any colour from light weathered downwards to black.
Good luck with your TID, it's gonna be heavy!

At 1/12 a 6" plank would be 1/2" (12mm) wide and a 4" plank would be about 3/16" or 8 mm. Don't forget the caulking which would be at least 1/2 mm.

   Hi Daz,
Those mahogany strips are a bargain, leave the walnut alone its hard to work with (I am a time served Carpenter so trust me) I am a bit busy today but I'll send you some photos of one of my tugs with a mahogany planked deck so you can see what it would look like. As to 15mm it will not look right on the boat 10mm, in my opinion, would be fine.
      Cheers,
           Pete.
P.S. I got your PM and I will email you over the weekend.

hi there
 tizdaz
What type of boat are you building?
Are you building a tug? or something of a similar nature?

The reason I am asking - the average width of a deck plank on a tug/working vessel is roughly between 3-5 inches broad on the 'real - I am's'  . It is only when looking at the old fashioned war ships and such that you begin to see planks in the region of 9-15 inches broad - very rare these days - expense I suppose.

Just curious.

If you have a look at HMS Exeter 1939 build, which I did a while ago - you will see a photograph which I put on of the decks - there are several officers have a look at their shoes which will give you an idea of the width of a plank i.e. shoes roughly about 4 inches wide or so.
