more Krispie advice sought
« on: January 05, 2017, 09:32:12 am »

Hi all,

Further to my last post here (looking for plans for Vic Smeed's Krispie), having got same I have been working up to starting a build. Having extracted various parts from the plan to produce templates for cutting out I am looking at the keel and it seems it would be ideal to steam a single strip and bend it to shape. Section is 10 x 16 - I have cut some (type unknown) wood strips. These are of a fairly soft open grained wood - I'm guessing some sort of pine. Can anyone give a thumb suck as to steaming and bending? How long? Allowance for spring back? Would soaking be better? looking forward to any and all suggestions. Thanking you,

cheers John K.

Personally myself I would just cut it out from a sheet of plywood.

No bending steaming or soaking   required.

I would also suggest ply or sheet balsa, as the keel looks like it has both stem and stern/rudder post as part of the piece.

Could do it with thick card. I saw a Krispy hull built totally out of cereal packet boxes then sealed.

That is why it was called Krispie, originally made with cereal cartons. nemesis

I agree. When I built Vic's Starlet, also added the rudder skeg to the backbone . Makes for a more solid build.
