CALYPSO pic's for Bigh
« on: August 18, 2007, 02:38:51 pm »

Hi just a couple of pictures of my Calypso.
I've just brought another one off ebay, & this time I want to light her up abit. I'm thinking about doing a thread of her during the build, if people were interested. Cheers Dan

Hi Dan,
It looks great - I assume it's a Billing kit? One of our members is building one, but it has yet to make an appearance.

Anyone know what's happening with the real thing.? I remember there was a dispute when Cousteau died and it was left to rust.

"CALYPSO"  the real thing.....

She is still moored in the inner harbour at La Rochelle and rotting! I believe the dispute, as to ownership, is still raging in the courts.

The next time I go down the road to La Rochelle I will get a few photos. of her current condition. I also constantly keep an eye open to see/hear if the media report any progress in the legal dispute. If there is any news I will update the Forum.

A friend of mine too these for me recently. the dispute is still going on, & they have removed approx 13 tonnes of equipment to help her float better. Dan.

Hi Pater, many thanks for the praise, a little goes along way. Yes it is a billings kit, loads of people warned me off the kit, but I've always loved the calypso, watching the programs as a kid, wishing I was with them, as you do, this is even what got me into scuba diving. Anyway, I really enjoyed the build, & as said earlier I've just brought another & intend to be a bit more adventurous with this one.
It's a shame the original is in such bad condition. The French government should step in & make it a national museum or similar. Dan.

I remember seeing her there some years ago and she has certainly gone downhill a lot since then. Why is it that vessels that should be preserved so often seem to be subjected to silly squabbling until they are a lost cause? Lots of examples over here too. All the energy that should be applied to preservation seems to go in stupid infighting.

I also grew up watching Cousteau's programs as a kid - its a shame to see Calypso in such a terrible state; I hope the decay is only superficial

Hi Dan,  Thanks for the photos, I can see that I quite a bit of work to do as the one I have got has had the same sort of life but in model size.   I believe that I have the Billing's kit as it looks the same as your first photo, it will be interesting to see your next one as you proceed with it.   bigH
