24 Hour Build, August 2007, PMBDT.
« on: January 24, 2017, 11:40:52 pm »

It was July 2007 when it was suggested that members of the Portsmouth Model Boat Display Team conduct some sort of fund raising drive. Our chosen good cause was The Naomi House Children's Hospice. What would be a suitable challenge??

We decided to try to build a radio controlled model, over a 24 hour period, sailing it at our August Model Show at Canoe Lake, Southsea. We would obtain sponsorship from individuals, and raffle the model off on the day to raise further funds.

The prototype would be a scaled up Vic Smeed design, HMS Harlech Castle, a Castle Class Frigate of late WWII vintage. Scaled up to 1/72 scale, it would be about 42" long.

Forward planning obtained us some resin fittings, plus the hardware needed, thanks to the guys at Model Power and Fratton Model Centre, both of whom donated the parts we were unable to source within the team. The plans were scaled up and work commenced at 9am on the Saturday.

Many trees were sacrificed in this build, and many tea bags %)

We had a core of members 'on build' for the duration, plus members dropping in as and when they could. Putting in as many hours as they were able.

Members bagged their work spaces, becoming very protective of their own empires. Laying claim to specific parts of the build, we all set to work.

Both Keith and Sandy laid claim to the main superstructure. Keith was one of our most skilled modelmakers, sadly not with us any more. Sandy has moved on to toy train sets (!!) that float :-))

Meanwhile, outside the animals were at work...they were not allowed a sledge hammer ok2

Main hull construction was in the hands of this bunch of reprobates, much comedy was to follow..

Meanwhile, back inside, our team of fine scale modellers were getting to work preparing a ship worth of fittings. Much absent minded staring a bits of wood followed. Keith was a blur of activity :}

The hull was a combination of a lower section built bread and butter fashion, with a more conventional framed and skinned upper hull. The timbers were glued and screwed together. Hull frames were then prepared for the next stage of construction.

I volunteered to do the radio fit out. The usual over engineered, showy offy looking bit of kit...it's what I do!
Meanwhile the fittings were piling up.

Inside, Graham was making steady progress on the Squid Mortar, while Sandy was progressing nicely with the lattice mast, Keith meanwhile, was steadily creating a very tidy bridge structure.
Outside a ship was being born...

While hull construction continued a pace, food was laid on. Much appreciated at this time of the day. It had to be about 1pm by now, and food was supplied on a rolling basis, not stopping work proceeding, just slowing it down....

We had a schedule we tried to stick to, it focused the mind, and that was about all. 2pm and all was behind schedule!

...Much noise was going on outside. A large amount of drilling with little end result.
While trying to drill a hole for the propshaft, the timber was proving much more resilient than expected. Deploying some seriously industrial equipment, it was only after about ten minutes that they realised there were two screws on the centre line, holding the hull together. Not only that, but they had been buried beneath another layer of timber, so could not be removed. Red hot drill bits and red hot language soon removed the blockage :-))

Thank you..seemed we needed a bit of happy stuff, so here it is in all its slightly wackiness....

Meanwhile, the animals had turned a corner. The prop hole was drilled, stringers were going round the frames and a ship was emerging from the ether.

I am not sure why I photographed this old wreck, but here it is anyway!!

My timekeeping went off the rails here, just a bit, but it is some time after 3pm, and John is using a kettle full of hot water to bend a plank, not make a cup of tea...things are coming together...

The main superstructure was now joined by the Bofors gun platform. The fittings are still awaiting paint...

Seven hours in and the hull sides are going on. 1/16" ply, suitably steamed and bent to shape using the hot water for the tea..the project has become all O0 O0 O0 O0 %% %% %% %% %%

Both the hull and superstructure parts were coming together as 5pm rolled round. Even better than that.....

With the hours ticking by, and Adrian having done more model making than the rest of his life put together, something had to give...

We decided to christen the ship Portchester castle, however it soon became PORTCHESTERCASTLE, someone forgot the gap! Also, never ask people to hold something steady to allow you to photograph it %)
