Fleet Tenders (1970s)
« on: August 03, 2007, 04:30:32 pm »

Having just about finished my "Loyal" class tender (from an excellent Model Slipways kit), I am ready for some crew.

How were they dressed on those boats ? Casual or uniform ?

If you have painted her grey (yuk), the crews were RN Reserve, so usually in No8's, Blue shirt, Dk Blue Trousers, Black Shoes or Black Steaming Boots.
Officer in charge RN Uniform, Mechanician in green overalls and black steaming boots.

I much prefer the Buff and Black ones though.
One minor point, I have seen lots of these models with solid guardrains outboard of the liferaft cannisters, they had a chain (removable) to allow them to be launched.

Thanks Bob

Its the Loyal Mediator so finished in Black and with light grey superstructure, so does the same uniform colours apply ?    Pleased to say mine does have chains outboard of the liferafts.

Yes mate ALL the Loyal Boats were RNR in the 70's, so No 8 Rig correct.

Hi. If you are talking about the use of this class of boat as a general fleet "trot boat" then the usual "dress" was casual to the ultimate degree. I guess the guys manning these boats had (have?) a degree of access to the "loan clothing" store but as far as I can recall it was always a case of "mix and match". When on more "formal" jobs the crews were generally dressed in standard AWD (Action Working Dress) of the blue shirt and darker blue trousers with DMS boots. They also had access to the standard "foul weather" gear. In the 1970's the powers that be (were) dictated that the blue foul weather stuff would be replaced with orange ones. Needless to say, very quickly the orange looked filthy and a credit to no-one. So they went back to blue. From a modelling point of view I would be tempted to go for the orange rubbish as you could really go to town on making the crews look like a bunch of hoboes (they were'nt!). Good exercise in weathering though! BY.

Bryan,
The Fleet tenders were all operated by the RMAS, so green overalls and "pirate rig". These were all painted black and buff.
The Grey Tenders were RN Diving Support and Training. So No8's worn.
This model is not a Diving Tender as the Superstructure not extended Forward for the 2 man Clucas Chamber.
