There are lots of uses for magnets as pointed out by canabus here
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,57126.0/topicseen.html
You can also get free magnets from the skip.
I got an old set of speakers from work and thought I would have a go at salvaging the magnets.
I found this really simple and clear 'how to' here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5o5HEfo8UY
The only 'special' tool you need is a flame. The guy in the video uses a gas cooker, I used a gas torch.
Lots of tips, and don't on the video as well, e.g. don't over heat the magnets as you can kill the magnetism.
The only tip I would add is that the magnets are brittle and any chips will be super sharp and stick to the rest of the magnet. After removal, I gave mine a quick coat of spray paint to resist chipping.

You can also get some smaller, powerful magnets by dismantling any old hard drive unit...

Magnet Fishing, add a rope to one end of some Magnets and bung them out in your lake ( Holding on to the other end of the rope ) then drag it in, you never know your luck.
Lots of Videos on You Tube.

Probably either a drag net fishing vessel or a full empty and traipse through the mud

Dunno but New style Copper Coins will as there is a lot of iron in them.
