what device can be used to measure mileage in a model boat?

A handheld GPS, like a Garmin Etrex, or one of those new sport watches that tell you how far you have run.

Hello,
I have used my gps cycle computer a few times. There's no set up turn it on and go, it's quite interesting. Mine gives max and average speed etc. If I had bothered to upload it it would plot my course on a map. Having said that the course it showed me on the display was just a huge squiggle.
I use a basic garmin it cost about £80 a few years ago. I suspect there are cheaper versions around now.

Thanks very much for the info but what ever I use it needs to work for at least 24 hours though without having to change the battery.
