Sail winch
« on: August 18, 2007, 06:33:30 pm »

Right pin your ears back thinking caps on Stavros as a problem(carefull ) well not me personally but, having just installed da Hi tech sail winch in a 10r I find that on full throw of the transmitter controll that the winch moves too much.A std throw seems to be around the 15inch area and I only want around 10ins.now I know this is not a problem with my yachts as I use a F16 controller and can limit my winch travel on the handset, but the 10r uses a std 2channel set,is there any way I could install rheostat or something similar to reduce the winch travel. At the present I have put a stop bar across the tranny but I feel something more professional could be done, any bright ideas out there cheers

Would an extra pulley mounted in the boat some distance away from your sailwinch use up a length of the unwanted throw?

Perhaps six inches times two would make the difference?  Has the winch been stripped and the gears been put back 'unequally' by any chance?
just a thought...............

Depending on what TX you have there may be an adjustable pot adjacent to the stick which could be tweaked to change the amount of throw. Worth a look anyway.

on my rtr set's radio I openned up the tx and found that the pots sit on a screw thingie, turning the screw adjusted the travel, took me ages to get it back to where it should be.  worth a try

Stavros, I think you're right.
Although the stop bar across the gimbal is a genius and neat way of getting yourself out of a pickle, there are indeed loads of other ways of doing the same job - and maybe a tad more professionally.
The URL at the top of the page - it's one of mine. I'm a tad reluctant to put it there, because 1)... I copied most of the info' from lifelong general R/C stuff anyway, and 2)... it might give the impression I'm singing me own praises. But if you scroll down to the bit where is says 'Pots' you can probably glean enough info' to do what you're wanting to do - only electronically, as opposed to mechanically.

Now can I ask you a question?

What is the national drink of Wales?
Over here in Somerset the main one is cider. I mean, in this neck of the woods, we've got apple juice. The Geordie's have brown ale, and the Scots' have whiskey.
What do Welsh folk drink?

Do you have cider there?

There used to be a Welsh whisky called 'Sheep Dip' I believe.

But I think Welsh Chapel outlawed booze  ;D

I went out with a girl who was 'Chapel' once. She said I would have to wait until we were married before we could have s3x. And once we were married we could still have s3x on sundays, but we mustn't enjoy it.  ;D

"xxxxx" THAT malarky!
You probably just got unlucky and pulled the short straw, because every Welsh bird I've met so far have been bang-on gorgeous and never been shy of pulling their panties to one side.
But I can't go there because young kids are ear-wigging the forum.

Sheep Dip?
Nah... can't be true......

Can it??

As we speak, amigo, we got 04:50 this side of the time zones. That means you're like what.... eight hours ahead of Blighty?
I've never been to Shanghai. Are the wimmin there just as frisky as the Welsh chicks?

I'm intrigued. What is Welsh Chapel?

Hi PMK

Welsh Chapel is/was a very puritanical branch of the protestant church.
Don't drink, don't smoke, don't use rude words, over-dress etc. Possbily will die out with the last few old ladies.

I am like 8 hours ahead. so you must be an insomniac.  ;D

Shanghai girls? Well that is not really for this forum.
Easy? Yes
Dollar signs in thier eyes? Yes.
Would I date one? No way, too much trouble. Once they get their hooks in ...

Would I date other Chinese girls? Yes. Although if SWMBO found out I would loose more than I bargained for.
Lots of nice girls here, mostly from other towns and cities.

Electrical Q now. For somebody on another forum.
I think there was a thread on converting a standard servo to act as an anchor winch.
Can you recall where it was? Or is it possible to start a thread in the 'How to' section so I can redirect him?

Oh, I think I read the same servo/anchor winch thread, too.
Where is it?... Gawd knows. Besides, it's 06:40 zulu, it's nearly time for some zzzzz's. Meaning, I'm damned if I can remember where I'd seen that particular thread at this juncture.
Holler if'n you find it before I.

SWMBO??
So that means you're spliced already.
Hmm... for some reason I just assumed you were a single bloke, living the high life world of loads of nubile wimmin at your feet, so to speak.
Hope I didn't put my foot in it. (Women tend to get a bit iffy if you mention your past conquests').
And don't blame me if she belts you 'round the log-hole.

So what's the score?... Is your good lady Shanghai'ian?

Insomniac?
Nope - I sleeps likes a baby, me... when I'm, tired. Just ain't tired, is all.
Do you remember a TV programme called 'Auf Wiedersehen, Pet'? Remember the cockney character called Wayne? He's dead now, dammit, but a couple days ago I met this chick who was married to him. She's writing a book about it, got the most gorgeous bum you ever could rub against, and I'm doing me best to be the perfect gent.

Tired?... Me??
I'm k'nackered!

Thanks for the chat, dude.
Hope your boating weather is better than it is here this morning.

By the by,
Thanks for the 'Chapel' info'.

HI PMK

I think I found it. A thread about steam vs sparks vs sail.

Malcomfray said he did it, but no details given.

'Servo                                                         £5.00  modified for continuous rotation for use as a winch'
It was just a list of jobs to do, so to speak. So I have started another thread under electircs.

BTW SWMBO is Chinese but not Shanghainese. I married a good 'un.
And good luck on your quest. ;)

I had the same problem with the Hitec winch and like you went for the mechanical solution. I found a brass collar with grub screw from some old electrical gear (Innards of all plugs etc always salvaged against future needs !) This slipped nicely over the joystick shaft and restricted the throw just right. Simple job to revert to normal throw  O0

Don't you believe it - its going strong round here in North Wales.  Where I live is the old Dwyfor Council area and they kept the ban on Sunday opening of Pubs until the Council was abolished in 1996. Everywhere else in the UK was alright but if you wanted a drink on Sunday you had to go over the border into the next Council area !!

Given half a chance they would bring the ban back again.

Anyway this is Stavros' winch servo thread so I am way off topic - sorry Stav.  I am off to the lake in ten minutes so I will give him my suggestions in person  ;D

Why not re-arrange the bit of string on deck to use more travel?  Alternatively, how about a smaller drum?

Tried rearranging the running lines along the deck but it started to look untidy, would have used a smaller drum if I had one

PMK thanks for that will look into that one

Stavros,
Why not fit a piece of wood or plastic into the TX slot to limit the throw of the stick?.
A nice neat job and a tight fit, painted to match the TX case, who would spot it?.
It could be taken out when not required - - - IF the boat sank !!!!!.
