 May 2007 SUMMER  NEWSLETTER

Hi Everybody,

We had a very successful exhibition at Highcliffe in conjunction with the local branch of the RNLI . With a record 73 boats on display together with Peter Taylor’s excellent photo displays and the RNLI souvenir stand we raised a record amount of £517 for the RNLI . A bit thank you to all who attended .

The AGM was held on  4th April and was attended by approx 25 members , the Captains and Treasurer’s  Reports  proved that the club was in good shape for 2007 . It was reported that we have put in a request to the Forestry Commission to charge visitors a small fee on Club Days to ensure that they have insurance and  to be able to  ensure that club and forestry rules are complied with whilst we are managing the lake. I am pleased to say this has been approved and is now in force
.  A Rule amendment for Young persons was approved by the membership to ensure that the club complies with the latest legislation , under 16s will now have to be accompanied by a  Parent, Guardian or Carer  whilst at the lake on club days .
Future events were finalised and it was confirmed that the Forestry Commission had agreed to allow us to hold a club fun day and BBQ  date to be confirmed.
We hoped to be able to attend some of the events arranged by Eastleigh Model Boat Club . especially Marwell Zoo and the Regatta .
It was confirmed that the Calshot Lifeboat day last year at which the club put on a display of 70 boats had raised £1700 for the station.
Readers may be interested to know that Calshot launched the Lifeboats  101 times last year  and saved 91 lives , the station is the 9th busiest in the UK  and it is interesting to note that every launch of the Calshot Lifeboats last year  cost £10,000. We will be exhibiting at the Open Day this year on Sunday 15th July and may also be putting on a display for Lymington Lifeboat Open day .

We had also raised £60 for the RNLI and £60 for the local hospital from our Xmas Lunch Raffle .

I am pleased to report that the lake is full of water again  and we look forward to a busy Summer at Setley Pond

See you at the lake,  DAVID  McNAIR-TAYLOR

 August 2007 AUTUMN  NEWSLETTER

Hi Everybody,

Welcome to our Autumn newsletter . I hope you have all enjoyed the sailing at Setley during the Summer despite the wet weather. At least it has kept the water level high at the lake . We have had a very busy summer and I thank you all for your support and participation .
The club membership is now at 100 and we continue to get applications , we must be doing something right .The main comment I get is how friendly we are and how helpful we are to each other.

STEERING COMPETITION for Richard Graham Trophy June 3rd .
A very good day with a challenging course designed by John Frost with courses for Large and Small boats . We had 16 entries and  all had a very enjoyable morning . The competition was won by Andy Davis  with Junior member  Andy Griggs second and Peter Oram in third place .
The next competition for The Solent Trophy is on Sunday 2nd September starting at  9.30 am . If you have never tried steering competition why not come along and see how good you are with controlling your model and join in the fun . It is not a deadly serious event just a group of  guys and gals enjoying themselves .

MARWELL ZOO . June 9th/10th .  The club had its usual stand booked but I had to increase the number of tables and we even had to borrow space on another club stand . All the members who attended had a nice week-end with very favourable weather in a great setting .

CALSHOT LIFEBOAT DAY  15th July . A great attendance from the club with over 50 models on display . We set up the stand with two Gazebos and Barry and Shirley’s Mobile Caravan and awning . We were also joined by Tony Olliff of The Model Lifeboat Society.  All started well and everyone was enjoying all the events when a tremendous thunder storm with torrential rain hit at about 3pm .It was so heavy that the lifeboat was called out twice . The stand was washed away and we had to pack up and go home . Thanks to all of you who attended and  I hope that you have all dried out yourselves and your models with no lasting damage .

LYMINGTON LIFEBOAT DAY 5th August . I was approached early in the season at the lakeside and asked if we would consider putting on a display  but was given no details or date .  We had no further contact until the week before and due to my incapacity following my operation I could not organise enough people . I understand from Peter Soffe that several members did attend and I thank you for responding to my  E mail request .  The turnout was disappointing but understandable considering the lack of notice we had .  We will do better next year I am sure .

FORTHCOMING EVENTS
.ROMSEY MODEL WORLD  . September 9th . Mountbatten School, Romsey . This is our big exhibition of year at a major modelling event in the south . Covering all aspects of model making , Boats, Cars, Tanks , Planes, Model Railways , Dolls Houses , Wargaming etc etc.
I have increased the number of tables to twelve following last years shortage of space . Please come along and bring your models  we need a good attendance . If you could let me know if you are coming and how models your are bringing it would help . ( 01425 618900). Set up time is 8.30 to 9.30 and show is open from 10am until 5pm  ( although we usually finish about 4pm). As much support as possible please.
A great day out for all the family with flying displays , car racing , model boat pond etc .
The exhibition is well signed  and is off the A27 .

Well that’s all for now , have a good Autumn  at the lake and I hope to see you there or at the exhibitions .          David
