artesania latina Amsterdam tug boat stand

Hi all, I'm trying to make a stand for my artesania latina Amsterdam tug boat.  I'm getting a bit fed up with trying to make a template then mark it out on a piece of wood then cut it only to find I'm miles out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cover your hull with a bit of clingfilm, roll 2 1/4 inch wide by about 16 inch long milliput sausages, lay them onto the clingfilmed hull where you want the stand to sit, wait for 24 hrs, remove the sausages and use them as a template to mark out some 1/4 ply...
