Aerokits Solent Lifeboat
« on: March 25, 2018, 02:24:14 pm »

I have a problem with choosing the motors for this boat.
The lifeboat I built in the early eighties and upto today it had 2 x Deceperms fitted(6volt). One of these now as developed a fault
and it is far too expensive to buy a new one,soI have  decided to go down the route of fitting a couple of MFA850's only to discover that these
love the amps and thus could burn my P94 ESC.

I would like to stay on the brushed side as I have the techobots sound generatormand this connects to the P94.

So which motors should I choose?

look on mobile marine models site.  they have some nice tug motors on there that may be suitable. not sure what the rpm on a 6v decaperm is.

ok you need roughly 3000rpm. that will give you options. you can use the mfa series 800/850 with gears but these are thirsty on amps. marks model bits do a 900 size motor as well. a 550 motor on 2:1 gearing is a cheaper option. try looking at beulher motors. some nice motors but can be pricey, still cheaper than decaperm

From Mobile Marine, the T!@ motor is superb, direct drive no need for a gearbox

Personally I would be looking at MFA800 motors running on 12v these only draw 6A and will give you slightly more power and they will not burn the P94 out

both my 46" Watson lifeboats are powered with cheap and cheerful 585's and give plenty of power for the boat.

and my 51" Barnett class lifeboat was also powered by 2 585's as well.......all on 12volts

the video of the big boat was running on starboard motor only as I was filming with my left hand precluding me from operating the port motor.

Lovely pictures Neil.   :-))  The film shows enough power if that's only one motor rotating.

Cheers

I don't know the 585 motor, unless that's a typo. Can you give some details please.

Sounds like Neil means a 385,
A tad small IMHO, but if its right,
they would be a very cheap solution
and they are certainly not current hungry.

I wondered if it was a 545, I've had a lot of success with these.

yes sorry, 545  or 555......the bigger motor.......think the 585 is the high revving high drain motor.......certainly not that,............I can get 1.5 hours out of a 12v 4amp/h battery shoving those heavy beasties around the lake.
