Scale conversation chart
« on: March 07, 2018, 08:47:51 pm »

Evening
Can anyone tell me where I can get a scale conversation chart ? I've looked on here and Google with no luck really. Can find railway scale but nothing else  {:-{ . Only asking because think it would be very quick and easy just to glance at it instead of trying to work it out all the time :-)) .If no chart exists I'll  have to sit down and put my maths head on  O0 starting with 1:12 Scale then 1:16 and so on.

Not sure what you mean by conversation chart?
However 1:12 is the " standard" dolls house scale, and scale rulers are available for building dolls house furniture etc.
if you google dolls house scale ruler, that should get you started.

This isn't a chart i.e. something tactile that you would hang on your workshop wall. It will however be a useful tool for you just the same.

erm, well the permutations of scale conversions must be mahoosive -you can find the likes in railway worlds but it doesn't always work for other reasons manufacturers choose to adopt.

Rule of thumb i.e. 1:12 to 1:16 -multiply by 12 then divide by 16 -orwhatever feaction of the two.  At the end of the day if you have one dimension on a plan -be it in xx dims, convert it to mm/cm/metres then divide by the new scale.

I usually ignore the "scale" on a plan.  I note the dimension off the plan in mm and multiply it by the converted figure to take me to my scale.  A plan may be stated at 1:200 but when it's printed it may be different (I have lots of plans I've printed off on different sized paper to save cost).    Thats about how simple I can think of it.  So a plan in "3-56th of a foot to the inch! or some "illigitimate" scale originally on A0 blueprints prints out at 200mm long on A3 -so thats even more confusing -use the multiplier.  If I know a length of something I scale it all of there -usually xxmm by y multiplier.

....how many scales do you want to convert between?  If you wanted to there's thousands of permutations you could sit down and put on a spreadsheet if you fancy or you can just do one calc. and multiply everything by "x".

or some "illigitimate" scale

....sorry but why was my post text auto changed from the original word meaning "(of a thing) no longer in its pure or original form".  I went to correct it back but the thread is locked since?  I would not use the term freely in other circumstances but believe its use correct here?  Should I have circumvented the word by spaces, dots etc as in other posts where bad language is OK?

Do I need to throw away two of my abrasive metalwork tools if the name is unmentionable now?  Thank gooodness I currently don't know anyone called Pete, imagine if I leant my metal shaping tools to him!
