Deans Marine Picket Boat

Trying to find a proper picture of this model - the Deans site seems to have only a very small photo.

Any comments on the kit would be welcome.

121 views and no replies.  Let me broaden the question.  There have been a number of negative reviews of Deans kits over the last few years relating to the quality of the drawings, instructions and cast fittings.  But when I queried this Mr D said his kits and instructions were always being updated. So what does the forum think?  I'd like to build the picket boat but want to know it's worth the £171.

It's all very much in the eye of the beholder.  One modellers opinion about a company can be based on just his experience or just on what he's heard other people say and written.  I recently bought a kit from a well known manufacturer which has the reputation of being the "puppies privates" in the modelling community (and no. I'm not saying which one) certainly the price reflects their standing.  I found that while the overall kit was OK, some of the fittings were poor and the fit of some was abysmal.   It's very much the Curates Egg when it come to low production run kits.
Unless you're working with a plastic kit from a major producer; Revell, Merit, Trumpeter, etc.  Kits should classed as "semi kits" because of the amount of work required to "fettle" them.

I have made a number of Deans kits for review and found that the quality tends to vary as, it appears, does the frequency of correcting/updating drawings and instructions.

A plus point with Deans is the wide range of choice with attractive prototypes which usually perform very well with the recommended power setups. But you do need to be prepared to check things carefully before wielding the hobby knife and a bit of experience with scratch building won't go amiss.

Deans are always very good at replacing any faulty fittings etc. although sometimes the replacements are not always much of an improvement if the mould is a bit worn. The problem is that with such a big range, some kits only sell in small numbers and retooling and updating is probably not financially viable. For those willing to work through these issues when they arise the result is usually an attractive model.

Hi
When I started back into model boats my first boat was a Deans Corvette and I have had a few more boats since then, at this moment I am working on his model of Bulldog, I also have his Robert E Peary to build.
O
As Colin said if you have a problem with any of the fittings Ron will replace them or if you buy a S/H boat and some of the fittings are missing Ron will sell you the missing parts.

That's all right, Mr Ryan. My Morse is so rusty, I could be sending him dimensions on Playmate of the Month.
