Totally new to model boating and hope you guys will forgive the torrent of questions that will surely be coming your way.

I have been given a kit of a Herring Drifter - Formidable - originally made by a company no longer trading.

I am slowly getting to grips with the instructions and most of the parts seem to be there except for something call a "bow post" which is supposed to be made from 9mm ply.  What is this "bow post"?

I also want to be involved in the yacht racing - which will have to be the next project after Formidable.

Many thanks in advance everybody.

Hmm, perhaps they mean stem-post. Try looking for this term using a search engine.

The bow post or stem post is quite often simply an extension of the keel up through the bow and provides the means to attach all the planking at the bow of the boat and give the arrangement the strength and stiffness it requires.

Welcome to the forum and don't worry about the questions, that is what we are here for.

By the way your Formidable isn't this one is it?:

http://historicsteammodels.com/products/Formidable_LT100_North_Sea_Drifter.htm

This used to be produced by John Hemmens in Selby, York, until he partnered with Historic Steam Models in West Sussex.  If it was originally his kit I am sure that Historic Steam Models would be happy to help with any information you may require for the kit.  I know John produced the model as either a plank on frame kit or a fibre glass hulled kit, so you would appear to have his plank on frame kit.

If its any use to you, there is a thread on my builds section on a steam drifter build - mine - but its scratch built.

If you can get hold of the book: From tree to sea by Ted Frost, isbn no. 0 86138 033 9  it details the build of the origional Formidable  on which the author worked.

Good luck

Ian

ps. keep us posted with pics etc.

Quick and very helpful replies - thanks very much.
Bunkerbarge - it is that Formidable but not from that company. I cant recall the actual company but I will look when I get home and let you know.  I think it's something like Myford?

I am really looking forward to this build and to getting into the yachts too - any recommendations for a raw recruit?

Don't spend too long on here, it's addictive and you wont get any building done. O0

Was it this one - Got a Gold Medal at the Model Engineer Exhibition last weekend. It was fitted with a Hemmens steam plant and I believe the kit came from the same source.

Look identical Colin.

Now I just need to find out the size and shape of this piece and the exact location at the bow - any ideas?

You are spot on DickyD - I have been building acoustic and electric guitars for about 15 yaers now and their forum is just as adictive but now it is giving help rather than asking for it which gives great satisfaction.

Hopefully as I get more builds under my belt I can give something back to this forum.

Now about this stem post.....

Hi,

I believe the Hemmens model originated from Marvon Models

Yes that's the one Marvon Models.

Thanks Jindivik - now I just need to try and find what the keel extension piece and the bow post actually look like and try to replicate them.  Will Hemmens be able to help do you think?

As I said earlier the Hemmens model is now distributed by Historic Steam Models.  That is probably as good a place as any to start.
