making a virtue of a necessity, advice needed
« on: July 08, 2018, 09:53:55 am »

I had originally installed an Ess one sound module in the engine compartment of my Dumas Chris Craft 1930, but the module gets quite warm and I wanted to keep the temp in that small compartment as low as possible.
So I decided to put it in the rear cockpit with its own battery in the rear steering compartment. I thought about disguising the module as a travel trunk or similar, then hit on the idea of a table that fitted with the style of the boat.
So far so good, it looks fine and the sound is clearer, but I have fastened it with velcro (both the module and the table top) and it is a bit wobbly. There is no danger of it coming loose, but just not quite right. I have used the similar product that is for hanging pictures and that is more rigid, but it is not suited to being regularly attached and removed.
I have seen industrial grade hook and loop advertised, which might be the answer, has anyone used this product, or any other suggestions?

Velcro is always going to be a bit wobbly as it is not a solid fit between pieces. Replace the velcro with some small neodymium magnets. Fit to the corners and will give a solid mount. You can look for them on e-bay but I prefer to buy from supermagnete.de who have a large range of magnets and give good service. A suitable magnet type for you would be

Hi Jim
I use very powerful magnets to hold the crew and set pieces like picnic basket in place, the ones attaching the dog and picnic set in my model have a separation weight of 12.5 kg, which I find amazing, but I was wary of using magnets so close to amplifier and speakers.
I can live with the wobble, but a significant reduction would be welcome, the picture mount system is good, but it is not intended to be attached and detached several times a week.

I bought some heavy duty "velcro" from Hobbyking. Its much stronger than the regular stuff. I would be happy to send you some if you let me have your address.

The velcro arrived this morning, excellent, thank you, with the added advantage of being black, so nicely unobtrusive.
Problem solved, my local model shop, Dockyard Model Shop in the Historic Dockyard, Chatham has a RNLI collecting box on the counter, so I will make a small donation next visit.
Thanks again.
