Newbie in need of some advice please
« on: September 19, 2007, 02:15:37 pm »

Hi Guys

After many years away from the hobby i am making a return. I have built a few scale boats 20+ years ago all from kits, I am considering building HMS Bulldog from a hull and plan!! Do you think this may be to adventurous for a first project? Also are there any photos freely available on the web?

Many thanks in advance

Hi Rob
I too came back to model boats after a gap of 25 years plus, the biggest hurdle I found was the way the hobby has changed in terms of building materials and control etc.
In my day everything was made of wood or metal and most of it went round in circles.
I think (and it's my personal view) that if your finished model surpasses your own expectations or you get enjoyment from the build, doing it your way, then what can be wrong with that?
If on the other hand you seek to build an exact scale model, be reasonable about what you are able to achieve on your own. There is a vast amount of knowledge to be found on this web site, I have been fortunate to benefit from this on many occasions and the vessel you mentioned has appeared in a few previous posts (worth a search)
I'm just an old stick in the mud I'm afraid and stick to what I know, I've tried some of the new kits and managed a reasonable effort, but plastic card doesn't do it for me.
