klz ...I think you are considering tilting the axis of the steam engine crank shaft to align with the propeller shaft
The degree of 'acceptable' tilt back will depend on the specific engine type & design......the areas of concern are bearing areas, journals & thrust........
Why not post a 1/2 section GA [plan] of the intended engine & you will see the effected areas if angular mounting or tilt back is made
An alignment with minimal run out between the engine & the propeller shaft is always a good foundation

Having said this, an alignment with a high degree of angular run out compensated by a universal coupling is itself a potential loading on the engine bearings/journals
