I am just finishing off a modelslipy shamrock I have had on the shelf for a couple of years my next project will be a river queen steam boat, I have been looking at the angle of the prop shaft I know I could use a universal prop coupler but could I angle the motor and use a solid coupler.

Are there any cons to what I am thinking, this will be my first steam build so I have no idea.

I've found, always best to leave a bit of movement between the engine and propshaft,  even if i's help prevent noise  / resonance.....

In a perfect world there would be no movement in the hull, but in the real world everything in a boat hull moves and twists a bit. Use a solid coupler for aligning and setting up the motor and shaft, then after everything is lined up switch to the universal coupler.

Morning klz ...I think you are considering tilting the axis of the steam engine crank shaft to align with the propeller shaft

The degree of 'acceptable' tilt back will depend on the specific engine type & design......the areas of concern are bearing areas, journals & thrust........

Why not post a 1/2 section GA [plan] of the intended engine & you will see the effected areas if angular mounting or tilt back is made

An alignment with minimal run out between the engine & the propeller shaft is always a good foundation

Having said this, an alignment with a high degree of angular run out compensated by a universal coupling is itself a potential loading on the engine bearings/journals

My River Queen just has a simple peg drive .A pin on the flywheel locates into a slot in a disc thats screwed onto the prop shaft

Hi Derek, you are correct I was planning on tilting the motor so its inline with the prop shaft. the motor is an MSM Clyde twin cylinder.  Once its on the bench I will have a go at setting it up how I was thinking and take a couple of photos, I am still waiting on the wood for the build so it may be a while before I have any photo's[/font][/color][/font][/size]

In lay terms, one would think that a pair free floating bronze/brass spacers [to take up all but a few 0.001" of longitudinal float] located on the crank shaft as shown would be sufficient .....  the Manufacturer may also consider the pair of piston rod bearings on the crankshaft pins must also be adequately supported ??

Additional lubrication would be required at each run, but a few drops of oil from a plastic needle oiler should suffice but again, [the dark green is steam oil]
Pease let us know the response, as it is a question that a number of builders could face

if its just a rc compatible open and close valve via a lever Jerry at Clevedon steam makes them

I believe ANTON in France still manufactures a 1/4 turn steam regulator......here is the ANTON product but from the Swiss Kramer WEB site

Some of our French members could confirm it's suitability
