Midwest Boothbay Lobster boat 30" build
« on: May 03, 2019, 12:01:40 pm »

As requested I will post photos here of my build.
I did point out that there are great blogs already out there. I like this one in particular http://wolfdenpress.net/lobster.html
DaveM has already built this to a very very high standard and now owned by member Timbo
Likewise very high quality build by Stan who is refurbishing his after near 30 yrs
PICTURED at the bottom
This kit comes with very detailed comprehensive instructions and perfect for beginners. As the box says ages 14+
I would have loved this as a child and will enjoy it equally well as a sexagenarian  :embarrassed:
I anticipate bringing this up to date with a brushless motor of modest RPM with 2s LiPo or 7.2 NiMh
Candidate for motor https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-d2836-9-950kv-brushless-outrunner-motor.html
I also have 2 options of Turnigy SK3 motor with 3mm shafts at home in stock that I bought for another project that I can try

I had been looking for an old stock unbuilt kit of this for quite a long time but only found the smaller display model.
Recently I found what appears to be a re release of the Original 30" in a redesigned box. This is the only seller worldwide it would seem and right here in the UK. There is one overseas listing but I twice placed an order without receiving an invoice to pay so a waste of time.
It occurred to me members might think why post a build blog for something that is not available?

If anyone wants to join me.

I have not posted this anywhere else but Mayhem
I have no idea of stock levels but just now you can get one at £199.50 .Good luck

This is a genuine business as I bought over the counter while on holiday at Crystal Palace less than 2 miles away

If anyone is even half-tempted, this is by a long way the very best wooden model boat kit I have ever handled. At two hundred quid it's a steal. Just do it - you'll not regret doing so.

These must be like the lost brand new Spitfires still in crates buried in Malasia  {-)

HI Guys this is what mine looked like 4 weeks ago until it developed a major problem. It has lasted 29 years before a major refit was needed but like a Phoenix it will rise  from the ashes.

Here is another snapped at Kirklees. The detail and colour are up to the builders imagination  :-))

Andy,
All the photos I've seen herein are done extremely well. You are right...lobster boat configuration was/is varied as the skippers who ran/run them. So after completing the basic general arrangement you can build it to be pleasing to your eye. I can't wait to see your version...I know it will be done extremely well.

You should build one while you have the very likely last opportunity

Well, this thread, along with others about the same kit, has convinced me to buy one. Hope I can do it justice - it will be the first RC boat kit that I've built

Super! DaveM believes these are the original old stock (I agree) and not a re release so very likely the last opportunity to buy new and build it. They would not say how many they have

Nice one  :-))
Only time will tell, she did say quite a few but clear as mud and impression was secretive {:-{

EDIT I've emailed Michael Grant to enquire about a specific stock availability. This is the man who replied to my original enquiry weeks ago before coming down here on holiday

I really like this stand contributed via a link provided by Chum444
Thanks Bill :-))
Just looking via eBay I calculate a cost between £40 to £50 assuming 25mm pipe and fittings?
This is PVC pressure pipe and only in grey in UK unless you can find different

I recommend a few upgrades to the stock kit. As supplied the pot hauling snatch block is rather crude. You can buy a much improved block from Blue Jacket in Searport, Me. See http://www.bluejacketinc.com/downeast.

The kit does not include the traps. Bluejacket has the round top wooden traps that are appropriate for the Boothbay boat. I cut mine down a bit in height since they looked a bit off scale as supplied. The lobsters from Bluejacket are not what I would recommend...they are too small. I got mine from Umi Ryuzuki in Portland, OR. Today’s LB’s carry rectangular wire traps but those are not appropriate for the Boothbay vintage boats. I will see if I can find some references for that era LB.

Did not know that Andy. I did not start with a kit for mine but bought a somewhat derelict completed boat that needed to be rebuilt to be true to type.

Speaking for myself
When I get home and hopefully make a start the first thing I need to do is play about with the plan and establish what length prop tube and shaft I will need (as a replacement) to facilitate my desire for a straight motor coupling and brushless motor. Top consideration is the same overall diameter so it fits the keel sections exactly the same.
I anticipate using a super flex or micro flex coupling from modelboatbits and likely ask Steve to provide the shaft etc too.
Steve previously did the special 8mm to 8mm coupling for my Portgarth and custom prop tubes with lubrication points for 1:12 Shannon jet drive conversion.

I hope other Lobsterers will share their work here  :-))

Well for  what its worth I built mine well over 29 years ago and I have to agree construction is very straight forward. The scale  of 1/12  allows lots of items  to bought to add that extra touch. Good luck if decide to build this model you will not be disappointed. We may in the future have lobster boat meet something to think about.  I will keep updating my old fishing boat thread to show how the refit is coming on.

Loyalhanna dockyards in the US sells a 22” fg hull as a replacement for the Midwest hull. $85.00 USD. Not a 30” hull but probably would work okay.

This kit went out production many years ago to be replaced with a ready to run version. I have to say over the years of attending model shows and club events I have not seen many midwest lobster boats looks like they will become like hens teeth.

As and when I get my kit I'll take steps to "future-proof" the design for anyone who wants one in the future. Ain't these 'pooters wunnerful?
