St. Nectan, MFM

Hello to all,

as some of you might know Martin has builded the Mountfleet Models "Highlander" for me. I was very impressed from the detailing of the Puffer but some of the bits are to weak or simple not usuable to make them functional. The biggest problem was the construction booklet, but thats a story that Martin can better tell.

I am not planing to build a St. Nectan because i cant do it nor is this a new plan together with Martin.

I am very impressed from the size of the boat and the loads of detailing but i wonder if the kit is worth the price.

1. Anyone builded a St. Nectan? Pics?
2. Pictures from the real think?
3. What did these trawler did during the war?
4. She was changed to oil after the war, what were the changes?
5. Quality of the kit?

St Nectan H411
Built by Cook , Welton & Gemmel at Beverley near Hull in 1937 for the Thomas Hamling trawler company of Hull
565 Gross Tons 210 Net Tons
Triple expansion steam engine of 157HP for 12.3knots
Pennant Number 4.139

1940 Requisitioned in May and converted into an APV ( Armed Patrol Vessel ) based in Harwich. Taken in hand for conversion to an anti-submarine vessel , completed in January 1941 and deployed to Gibraltar. Returned to owners in April of 1946. Broken Up at Antwerp in 1967.

Think she may have been oil fired from new but not 100% sure.

I too, have the St Nectan brand new in it's box. This will be started this weekend, so your posting could not have come at a better time.

Thank you for the pictures, Martin. Very detailed and excellent build there Something for all to aspire to.

I'll do a "What's in the box" post for others to see what you get for £625

I am also interested in the St Nectan but can not seem to be able to get into contact with Mount Fleet Models. Does anyone know if they are out on holiday or if there is some problem with their contact page on their website. Any  help would be appreciated and if someone is close enough to phone them that would be great. I am in the US and calling at this time would be impractical as I am also on my vacation.

The proprietor of Mount Fleet models is Sue Hinchcliffe who runs the business basically on her own so such things as attendance at shows etc take her out of communication.  I also know she doesn't like dealing with e-mails so they tend not to get the immediate response we would like.  The best method is definately to give her a call at obviously an appropriate time of day and if this is not convenient at this time then it is probably best to wait until it is more convenient for you.

Made contact. Bit the bullet. Ordered the St Nectan. It is one of the finest detailed kits I have ever come across. I am sure that the builders on this Forum found it to be a great joy. Looking forward to do this one.
