how do you build a nice looking stand?
« on: November 11, 2007, 03:38:34 am »

Hello folks

Right now my boat build is sitting in a nasty bit of bodged together MDF, hull lines hacked out of a piece of card board, fitted until about right, and then drawn on MDF and whizzed around with the jig saw.

It's fine for the build, but not so good for the finished thing.

Just wondering if I can see some piccies or even a build thread of a posh, or semi-posh, model stand.

Also, any advice on how you cut nice lholes so the boat fits in snug as a proverbial rug would also be appreciated.

hi there,

I made this stand using white ash wood for the main base and, also, turned white oak supports.  This stand, I only use for display purposes, as the model isnt really secure on it.   I have, what I like to call 'a building stand' made out of plywood which she sits on for transportation (i.e. in the back of the car) and also at home on the shelf.

hope this helps.

hahahahah Peter it took me 5 goes through the planer/thicknesser to get rid of the inscription - that wasnt the hardest part, it was finding a churchyard with one good enough  :)

But, joking apart, the timber came from an old school desk (the ash) and the American white oak came from the timber yard your honour, honest  O0

I used a profile gauge to get the shape I required to construct my multi purpose carrier for my Tito Neri.

Though I have since fitted pneumatic tyres to reduce the vibrations when pushing it along the rough path ways.
