I think that is a great story and just goes to show that it doesn't matter how you go about getting your boat on the water as long as you get enjoyment out of what you have done.
I'm sure the experience will lead you onto your own projects and you will start to do more and more for yourself but at the end of the day it's whatever "Floats your boat".
Then, of course, there is always the fourth method, buy second hand and hack it around or restore it to suit yourself. Most of mine come under this category as, like you, I have very little time to spare so I have to be as creative with my productivity as possible.
