Wow, all those useful things to clutter up the bottom of a boat. And here I was using shot from the local sporting goods/gunshop. The stuff bullet reloaders use is excellent...nice little round pellets that fit in all the cracks and crevices, easy to adjust fore and aft, port or starboard if needed. The bags of nails, tire weights, uh huh...all prone to shift in a heavy sea...can you say "capsize"?  If you want, after you put them in, add a bit of liquid resin, over the top, and there they stay. I prefer the steel shot as opposed to lead, as it keeps the tree huggers happy. I wouldn't want some one with a model of the Greanpeace Rainbow Warrior coming along and ramming me because I have all that eco unfriendly toxic lead in my vessel!
Fair winds, and following seas....

To be honest lead ballast is the least of a problem if a model sinks if you take into consideration the toxic shyte that is in the batteries, like Nickel, Cadmium, the "eco friendly" hydride batteries still have nickel, which is probably just as bad as cadmium, then you have the crystalised sulphuric acid and lead plates in lead batteries. If you run IC and your boat sinks, you have a potential oil spill. and you worry about lead ballast?

HSE or MCA get wind of the potential to polute then this "hobby" could become very costly ???

did someone mention my name and nuke in the same sentence??

well as this is a ballast thread, this is what I used on Gemini, the single ni-cad pack didnt add enough weight, there is 1.2kg (20 strips) of tyre lead in the hull.  the vasy majority of it located up the sides at the front of the hull, going 3/4" above the water line.  at the stern are only 6 strips and its ALL above the water line, because the hull is too thin to get it down low

Ghost, you make a good point about the batteries, sir! Unfortunately, my boat goes extremely sllllooooow without said batteries.....I will not however, build a "blow boat". I guess I'm not eco friendly enough.I do however ride a motorcycle to work each and every day with excellent gas mileage. It does wonders to relieve my guilt about global warming, and pollution in general! (Does that qualify me for the million and a half dollars that Al Gore just got for winning the Nobel Prize)? I could build a really nice fleet with that kind of coin! LOL
