Race handicaps
« on: December 22, 2019, 02:38:41 pm »

Has anyone ever sailed two different classes together?   How do you manage with handicaps etc?we sail Fairwinds as a single class, and WeeNips and Discoveries together. In full size you can use the Yardstick, so no problem with the Handicaps etc.Any ideas please.

Hi, I'm french dave and this is my first post, prompted by your query about race handicaps. I had the same problem a while ago and came across the RYGGED start.

Developed by the Lee Valley Model Yacht Club, it works irrespective of the yacht type and is based on the performance of the yacht and skipper in previous races. Bit like a golf handicap I guess. It's on their website. Good luck with it.

Hi, we tried the RYGGED start at our club, but found the less experienced skippers found it hard to get through the fleet to the line at their appointed start time.
We now just set 2 windward marks, one several meters shorter than the other for the handicapped skippers to sail around. This has the advantage allowing us to lenghten or shorten the handicapped course depending on the conditions.
Overall though, we have found it difficult to come up with a handicap system thats works well & certainly haven't found one that works well from just using maths. Best to try several methods & see what works best for your fleet, venue & conditions.
