hms eskimo
« on: January 23, 2020, 03:49:16 pm »

This is my first attempt at a Deans Zulu. As i served on Eskimo  66/68 commission i thought i had better convert Zulu.
It was an interesting build and a definite measure twice and cut once policy.

I remember seeing one of the Tribals dry docked in Southampton back in the 1960s. No security, you could just wander around in that more innocent age.

I stood by Eskimo when she was building in JS Whites in Cowes. We commissioned in Feb 1963 and after workup at Portland went off to join the the 9th Frigate Squadron based in Bahrein
Ned.
I think Gurkha was built in Thornycrofts Colin.

It may well have been Ghurka - rings a bell. The Tribals were the equivalent of todays Type 31s as being cheaper to build than mainstream frigates and destroyers. The single screw was criticised at the time I remember.
