try your local building supplies place, they often sell  huge sheets of the stuff, both blue and pink in colour for cavity wall / insulation filling, -

the big DIY stores like wickes may also do it, - i get mine from the builders merchants at the end of my road, i have also been lucky in the past and got broken sheets for free, or the price of a pint... damaged so they can be sold but still plenty big enough for model use....

tips are use a mask when cutting it/ shaping/ sanding,- the dust is bad news for the lungs !
cuts with bread knife, hot wire and can be easily shaped wih a surform.

it will glue with PVA, it takes a while to dry or you can use solvent free building type adhesives ( like no nails stuff- but it must be solvent free)- or you can use double sided carpet tape for temp to semi permanent fixings.

good luck , its good stuff to work with

Thanks for the advice everyone O0

I live in Stanmore, roughly 10min from Wembley Stadium. I don't need much, the boat hull i have in mind will be only 300mm long! Is it something you can post Phil?

i can post it but it's a bit bulky. as your in stanmore try ruislip at sheffield insulation. they should have bucket loads of it and hopefully some broken bits you can get for nix.

if you can't find the number locally i'll get it for you.

Voyager,

I've never seen blue/pink or any extruded foam at a B & Q.  But  I have been to a sheffield insulation and talked to all the staff - they had several densities, thicknesses etc.

The stuff we use for model planes is Dow Floormate 200 (blue) but for your purposes any density greater than this would probably be better (300, 400 or 500)

Point is that when they discovered what it was for , and that damaged sheets were fine, they sold me one sheet and gave me several others and bits.  (Espace with no seats!)

I have a lifetime supply and slice it into planks, etc for all sorts of things (especially having discovered polyurethane glue!)

Its also used as a spacer for fork-lift pallets, and is thrown away -  ask at a builder's merchants

Thanks very much for the info O0 If i can't get a thick enough sheet for what i want then i can always glue sheets together from what i'm told? Where would i be able to purchase polyurethane glue? I had no idea about the different densities either, I'm pleased i'm finding all this out first before i go and buy the wrong thing!

PU glue - I get mine from a local carpenters supply shop - they sell both Gorilla Grip (the one the Americans rave about) and an unbranded one which works (for me) much better.

Also comes for Screwfix at extremely good prices and quick and cheerful service.

Notes about PU glue if you havnt used it:

Poisonous till set.  Hideously, and through the skin
Needs to be clamped a little till set - it expands to fill the gap by foaming
wet surfaces if you want speed
Use pvc tape to cover the outside of a joint so you don't have to clean it up
If you need a foam gap-filler froth a little up with water and pour it into hole
It cures by atmospheric water - so any open container eventually goes off - I get about 6 months

HI there
I thought I saw that you could glue it together with
a hot glue gun no need to poison yourself.

Can you post a thread on how you get on please if it
works I may copy you for another project  ::)
