Clamps
« on: May 07, 2020, 11:22:23 am »

Hi all,

In am in the process of building an Aero-naut classic speed boat, as my first kit.
I have bought a a lot of spring clamps, but could do with something a bit wider.
I have seen previously some small versions of speed clamps, with maybe 2-4" grip.
But I cannot find anything that I am confident I'd not going to be too big, made for DIY rather than model making.
Can anybody make a suggestion of where to look, what to buy please.
Thanks
Rich

People also use masking tape for clamping whilst planking, or for holding superstructure together whilst gluing.
I am a bit tied up up at the moment to search for examples, but have a look at the master build sections, and look for clamping there.

I have some of the Silverline ones Martin recommends and find them very useful. They are also quickly reversible which also comes in very handy if you want to press surfaces together such as cockpit sides to hulls etc. Silvrline do a smaller version which is red in colour. I have some of both.

Another vote for the Silverline clamps. I also use Irwin Fast Clamps. Advantage with both of these types of clamps is that you can regulate the force whereas with spring clamps it's all or nothing. I only use them when I've run out of the others!

I also use brown parcel tape as you can really pull hull skins together with that. Big elastic bands are also useful.

I'm with Martin et al. I have the 4" and 6" versions. Cant have too many. Loads of spring clamps as well. The scissor pattern means they can be uses in narrow spots.

Thanks all.
I'll try some of the silverline ones.
It's difficult to tell how chunky they are on line.
I have some which are not much bigger grip, but are much too heavy and robust.

Silverline gets my vote as well - usually buy mine at Wilko - plenty other outlets of course but, beware of 'cheap' copies. I bought a pair from a 'pound' shop and found that the plastic ends were smooth and provided no grip at all.

As a plus for the silverline clamps, they are also reversible for use as 'stretchers'.

Regards,
Ray.

Hi Rich   just to give you an idea of the size of the clamps,  mine aren't mega powerful but ample for what we use them for and these were cheap as chips.
