Hi All

It's been a while since I posted and that is because I found an error on my build that occurred 3 1/2 years ago.  The error was that I had set the rear counter timbers at the wrong angle which to put right at this stage would have been incredibly difficult. So I thought the best thing to do was to just step away for a while and get a fresh outlook on the build.

I discovered this error when I fitted the stern timbers and stern windows.  The stern timbers went above the counter timbers and the windows were far too close to the rear quarter deck beam.  I did actually think about not finishing it but you know how it is - upwards and onwards!

So to get things back level I had to do some sketchy repairs starting with the rear quarter deck beam which now required lifting upwards.  Rather than do that I simply made it thicker than the plans.

Next I made the beams for the quarter deck - here's the process in pictures

I always enjoy cutting the dovetails its a very satisfying process

The beams were then set into the clamps at there correct heights using a height gauge and they were sense checked simply using a ruler

Next was to make the beam supports which sit under the beams

And finally the waterways that sit above the beams.  These parts had to be bespoke due to the error that I had made.

The waterways were then shaped to be level with the planksheer and the notches for the carlings were cut in.

So now that the quarter deck beams are complete I can remove them all and get on with some of the interior details.

I saw the pictures of Mayhem and it looked like a fantastic weekend - amazing!!

We are off to Crete next week for 2 weeks to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday so I'll be back on the build after that.

Thanks Mark

Mark, I seriously doubt that any ship came off the slipway exactly as the plans dictated.
Modifications and unplanned alterations were very frequent indeed.  Your model is superb. Only on criticism.......we have to wait too long for updates.. O0

Mark, a very good refit to adjust it to the correct proportions. You are basically replicating the historical shipwrights skill as they did not work to accurate plans but built from their experience. At the most there would have been a model, either full or half to show the lines.

Hi Footski and Jim

Thanks for the comments  :-))   I'm definitely back on track and funnily enough just about everyone I have spoken to has said exactly what you both have!

Sorry about the slow build I just wish I had more time on my hands.  I've made a start on the interior quarters now so hopefully have an update soon.

Cheers Mark

Just caught up with your latest instalment.  I know honesty is the best policy - but you could have cracked on without telling us, and we would never have known!  Great fix, and as has been said before, every wooden ship had deviations from plan, repairs, refits and so on, so yours is just the same.  I am still in awe of the neatness of your work, such as the notches for the carlings.  Sharp tools, a steady hand and a good eye do the job - but yours seem sharper, steadier and better than anyone elses!

Hi Greg - thanks but I must confess that I cut the notches for the carlings on my milling machine.  I find this way I get a uniform depth which makes fitting them tightly so much easier.   As the cutter is round I just have to square the corners up using a chisel.

Hey Mark

The build gets ever more mind bending in it's detail, incredible detail.  I'd have reached for the epoxy before even contemplating those dovetail joints.

And as for the 3.5yr old glitch, have to agree with earlier comments, all these boats were basically hand built back in the day I'd reckon the plans were more of a guideline with parts shaped to fit what was actually present rather than in the plans.

Great work..!

When a ship did have actual plans drawn up they were not full scale. The shipwright then had to scale up the drawing onto the floor of the cutting room whee templates would be made before cutting wood. The videos on restoring Tally Ho shows this process. Even with our modern measuring methods they still had to fair in the frames before planking. Even a small error in measuring could give a large error in the full size wood part. Many of the existing ships draughts we use to build models from are not those a shipyard woulod have used but measured from the completed ship later in it's life, especially for captured ships.

Hi Jim - that is spot on  :-))   When the shipwright was given the plans they had to be lofted to the full size part for the ship builders to use as a full size template.  The reason it was called "lofting" is because the loft of the workshop was the biggest flat area where this work was traditionally carried out.

Hi Guys

Well after a lovely holiday I'm back at it - this time I'm making the wall with double doors that separates the main deck from the crews quarters.  It's a shiplap wall so firstly I made the shiplap planks and got them all glued together.

Next was the doors - I usually use a solid piece of wood and mill the features into it to make it look like a door.  I thought on this occasion I would try a new exercise and make them exactly as they would have been.  So each door has 5 pieces in the frame with 4 inserts to complete them.

The frame parts

Milling out the rebates for the 0.7mm thick inserts

Sorry I should have taken more photos but here are the assembled doors - the assembly was the hardest part

Next I milled out the door frame uprights and the wall base plates that the walls fit into along the lower deck.

All of the current parts assembled

After a bit of fettling the whole assembly fitted into the ship quite nicely

I did have one issue and that was the door frame uprights not allowing the whole assembly to sit flush with the beam.  This maybe because I read the drawings wrong but to overcome this I cut 2 rebates into the beam to accommodate the uprights.  This has actually made everything more stable and solid too.

Its still very much a work in progress but I'm getting there.

Thanks for all of the really nice comments and discussion too  :-))

Cheers Mark
